Starr Ayers: Aisle of love

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28, NIV

Determined to make it home before dark, I dashed into the grocery store for a few items. Like a woman on a mission, I snatched a grocery cart and fixed my sights on the produce section. Passing the front desk, I overheard the laughter of an elderly couple engaged in a lighthearted conversation with the store manager.

The woman, in particular, caught my eye. Though clean, her hair was disheveled, and her clothes were mismatched and crumpled. I stayed on task, hoping not to bump into anyone I knew. Tossing the needed items into my cart, I methodically marked each one off my list, checked out, and made a rapid exit while the threesome still chatted at the desk.

When I pulled from my parking space and approached the store entrance, the older couple I’d seen inside stepped off the curb and passed in front of me. The lady clutched her husband’s hand and clung to his arm with her other hand while her unsteady frame leaned into his. She followed his lead. The slight smile on her face testified to a lifetime of love and trust. His face reflected a look of contentment and peace.

God directed my thoughts to a verse from my morning devotion. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. To my spirit, he whispered, “That’s what I’m talking about.”

The lady, walking as one with her husband, wasn’t worried or anxious. She simply followed his lead, trusting him to direct her steps. She had found rest for her soul. The man didn’t appear burdened by his responsibility. His pleasure showed on his face as he lovingly guided her and showed her the way. His burden wasn’t heavy, it was light.

We have a companion who loves us and desires to do the same. God delights in our company and longs for us to walk with Him. He is gentle and lowly in heart. Our load is not too great for his strong shoulders; he will carry our burden as we shift its weight onto him. Lean into his side and allow him to guide you. There you will find rest for your soul.

Share the news of Christ’s love with those who are weighted down by the concerns of this world. His shoulders are big, and he will lift their burdens, too.
