Uwharrie Charter wins wrestling tourney in Bunn

The Sportstone.net Christmas Invitational played at Asheboro High School last week drew most of the week’s sports attention with schools out for the holidays. Here are some highlights from that action as well as some other notes from elsewhere:

BOYS BASKETBALL

Sportstone.net Christmas Invitational

*Chase Farlow scored 15 points while Tyshaun Goldston posted 12 points, 10 rebounds and 7 blocked shots as Randleman edged Eastern Guilford 53-52 in first-round action. 

*Connor Cassidy scored 17 points in Randleman’s 63-45 victory over West Brunswick in the tournament semifinals. Greg Price contributed 14 points while Goldston had another double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Goldston also blocked five shots.

*Nathan Ellis produced 20 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists as Southwestern Randolph downed North Carolina Leadership Academy 66-50 in the first round. Marcus Robertson added 14 points and 6 rebounds. Kenan Sugg had 10 points.

*Finley Bryant scored 12 points as Wheatmore fell 65-32 to First Flight in the Yellow Jacket Classic. Robert Nyamongo had 8 points and 10 rebounds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sportstone.net Christmas Invitational

*Audra Petty scored 18 points and got 8 rebounds in Randleman’s 55-42 loss to Eastern Guilford in the first-round. Aislyn Laughlin added 14 points for the Tigers.

*Laughlin led the way with 15 points and 8 rebounds as Randleman beat Trinity 49-10 in the consolation bracket. Petty had 13 points. Addyson Dees had 8 points and 8 rebounds.

*Brooke Ingram had 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals as Providence Grove beat Asheboro 60-23 in the first-round. Jada Nixon added 9 points and Alysha Brown had 8.

*Kenly Whitaker scored 14 points and got 10 rebounds as Eastern Randolph beat Jordan-Matthews 42-38 in the Yellow Jacket Christmas Tournament. Callie Craven added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

*Petty scored 21 points and had 6 rebounds as Randleman edged Asheboro 41-38 in a consolation round game. Laughlin added 13 points.

WRESTLING

*Randleman’s Alex Raymundo (3rd, 106) and Braxton Walker (3rd, 215) placed in the R.J. Reynolds Holiday Invitational in Winston-Salem.

*Uwharrie Charter won the team title at the Wildcat Invitational in Bunn. Winning for the Eagles were Ethan Hines (106), Levi Dennis (132), Charles Schaefer (144), Carson Robinson (157) and Jaden Maness (215). Others who placed were Drake Dixon (4th, 113), Rick Riccardella (3rd, 126), Brandon Jordan (2nd, 132), Jack McArthur (2nd, 138), Aiden Foster (4th, 144) and Caden Bond (2nd, 190).

SOCCER

*Southwestern Randolph’s Fernando Hernandez was named to the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association 2-A all-state team and Randleman’s Brian Vaughn was named Assistant Coach of the Year.

VOLLEYBALL

*Southwestern Randolph’s Coley  Shiflet and Madelyn Smith were named to the North Carolina Volleyball Coach-es Association 2-A all-state team.
