Trinity’s Payne scores 97 points in two games

Dominic Payne scored just shy of 100 points in a two-game span last week. 

Let’s check out those and other highlights from the week.

 

Boys Basketball

- Gavin Strickland scored 12 points as Wheatmore edged West Davidson 46-44. Parker Kines added 8 points and 2 blocks for the Warriors. Riley Strickland had seven points. 

- Dominic Payne dominated with 44 points in Trinity’s 77-41 rout of East Davidson. Jacob Hodges had 9 points while Brandon Campbell and Evan Stepp each had 8. 

- Payne continued to sizzle, with 53 points in Trinity’s 78-72 loss to Southern Guilford. Campbell added 11 points.

- Jerquarius Stanback scored 25 points in Asheboro’s 53-39 win over Providence Grove. David Rodriguez had 13 points. James Ellis led Providence Grove with 17 points and Gabe McKoy had 9. 

- Stanback scored 29 points as Asheboro beat Westchester Country Day 79-60 in the Headliners Challenge at Wesleyan Christian Academy. Camden Walker added 12 points and Elijah Woodle had 10 for the Blue Comets.

 

Girls Basketball 

- Audra Petty scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Randleman’s 64-45 loss to Oak Grove. Chenleigh Robinson contributed eight points. 

- Laurel Bernhardt led the way with 19 points as Providence Grove beat Ashe-boro 71-68 in overtime. Brooke Ingram added 18 points and Jada Nixon had 11. 

 

Wrestling 

- Asheboro’s Bearik Bigelow had a second-place finish at 120 pounds in the Cedar Ridge Invitational. The Blue Comets’ Alex Patino (132) and Oscar Zelaya (138) was fourth.

- Eastern Randolph’s Trevor Crabtree, David Lampright, Houston Harrelson and Joshua Watson were all 2-0 as the Wildcats split a tri-match with Lexington (51-30 win) and R.J. Reynolds (45-33 loss). Trevor Young was 1-0. 

- Aiden Burkholder, Edgar Vasquez, Spencer May, Braydon Hall, Jaden Allred, Charles Schaefer, Baron Justice, Gavin Hardister and Joseph Trahan were all 2-0 as Trinity beat Oak Grove 51-18 and East Davidson 73-6 in a tri-match. Omega Edge and Jayden Henry were both 1-0.

- Wheatmore’s Trey Swaney (138) and Dominic Hittepole (175) won their weight classes at the Jet Invitational at Enka. Others who placed in the top four were Noland Hammonds (4th, 126), Zack Starkweather (4th, 150), and Noah Browning (4th, 190). 

- Trinity wrestlers placing in the top four in West Rowan’s Thanksgiving Invitational were Aiden Burkholder (2nd, 106), Edgar Vasquez (2nd, 113), Spencer May (1st, 120), Brayden Hall (3rd, 126), Jaden Hall (3rd, 138), Charles Schae-fer (4th, 144), Baron Justice (3rd, 150), Gavin Hardister (2nd, 215), and Joseph Trahan (3rd, 285).
