Trinity outlasts SW Randolph in final seconds

The showdown between Randleman and Eastern Randolph was all fans could hope it would be, but so was a matchup between Trinity and Southwestern Randolph. 

 

Here’s a recap of reported games from last week and other scores. 

 

Trinity 27 

SW Randolph 25 

Dominic Payne threw an 85-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Hodges and scored on a 1-yard run as Trinity edged Southwestern Randolph 27-25. Noah Bradley threw touchdown passes of 66 and 14 yards to Hodges. Cam Nelson had an interception for the Bulldogs.

 

The Cougars’ Nathan Ellis returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown while Colton Law had a 6-yard touchdown run, Owen Whelan had a 30-yard touchdown run and Jentezen Cox had an 18-yard touchdown run. Danny Jackson recovered a fumble. T

 

he winning score came with six seconds left in the game.

 

Eastern Randolph 22 

Randleman 21 

Carter Revelle was 12-of-16 for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns as Eastern Ranolph edged previously unbeaten Randleman 22-21 to win the PAC championship. Lucas Smith had 104 yard rushing and Nicah Taylor had 131 yards receiving. 

 

Randleman’s John Kirkpatrick threw touchdown passes to Tyshaun Goldston and Amari Ferdna. Edison Hernandez ran for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Six volleyball teams took to the courts last week in the NCHSAA state playoffs. This week, soccer playoffs will dominate the landscape. Here’s a recap. 

 

Volleyball

 

1st round State Playoffs


 

*Sarabeth Johnson had 24 kills and 18 digs as No. 16 Trinity beat No. 17 Forbush 17-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-23 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Karrington Batten had 16 kills, 6 blocks and an ace. Kaitlyn McCoy had 14 kills and 16 digs while Avalynn Johnson had 54 assists, 19 digs and 3 aces. Natalie Franko had 8 kills and 2 blocks. Faith Powell had 25 digs and 2 aces.

 

*Gracie Hodgin had 8 kills and 6 digs in No. 3 Southwestern Randolph’s 25-11, 25-17, 25-7 sweep of No. 30 Lincoln Charter in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Madelyn Smith had 6 kills and 3 aces. Coley Shiflet had 14 digs while Molly Smith had 12 assists and 2 aces. Raegan LeRoy had 12 assists, 4 aces and 3 digs.

 

*Camden Scott had 19 kills, 20 digs and 2 blocks as No. 12. Randleman held off No. 21 Community School of Davidson 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Haley Hinshaw had 11 kills and 10 digs. Ava Jones had 14 kills, 5 aces and 2 blocks. Camryn Vickery had 54 assists and 10 digs. Haleigh Baity had 9 kills and Mollie Hall had 6. Karli Kennington had 18 digs and Kadie Green had 6.

 

*Kenly Whitaker had 45 assists and 25 digs in No. 22 Eastern Randolph’s 22-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-14 win over No. 11 Hiwasee Dam in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. Addie Flinchum had 24 kills and Mariana Corea had 8 blocks.

 

*Lizah Moore had 11 kills in No. 5 Uwharrie Charter’s 25-7, 25-9, 25-8 rout of No. 28 Bethany Community in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. Emory Johnson had 17 assists, 3 digs, 2 aces and a block. Kayden Faglier had 5 kills and 3 blocks.


 

In the 3-A state playoffs, No. 16 Asheboro lost to No. 17 St. Stephens of Hickory in four sets, 21-25, 26-24, 13-25, 21-25.


 

Second round

 

*Madelyn Smith had 14 kills and 16 digs as Southwestern Randolph swept No. 19 Mount Pleasant 25-19, 25-10, 25-6 in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. Hodgin had 10 kills while Riley Key had 8 kills and 3 blocks. LeRoy had 23 assists and 9 digs. Molly Smith had 16 assists, 8 digs and 3 aces. Shiflet added 15 digs.

 

*Faglier had 13 kills as Uwharrie Charter beat No. 14 Mountain Island Charter 14-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-23 in the second round of the 1-A state playoffs. Moore had 9 kills and 5 digs. Caroline Way had 7 kills and 3 blocks. Chloe Painter had 12 assists, 5 kills and 2 blocks.

 

*Scott had 7 kills and 7 digs in Randleman’s 25-17, 25-12, 25-12 loss to McMichael in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. Baity had 4 kills while Hall and Hinshaw had 3 each. Kennington and Hinshaw both had seven digs. Vickery had 14 assists.

In 2-A, Trinity lost to to No. 1 East Surry, 3-0.


 

In 1-A, Eastern Randolph lost  to No. 6 seed Christ the King, 25-18, 27-25, 25-16.


 

Third round

 

*Madelyn Smith had 20 kills and 13 digs as Southwestern Randolph downed No. 6 West Stanly 25-13, 24-26, 25-15, 25-22 in the third round of the 2-A state playoffs. Hodgin had 14 kills and 4 aces. Key had 7 kills and 3 blocks while Molly Smith had 22 digs. Jade Matias and Kinlin Hulin both had five kills. Shiflet had 31 digs. LeRoy had 26 assists and 12 digs.

 

In other action:


 

In 1-A, Uwharrie Charter lost to No. 4 seed Cherokee in four sets, 16-25, 17-25, 25-17, 19-25.


 

Fourth round


 

No. 3 SW Randolph lost to No. 2 Brevard, 25-23, 15-25, 14-25, 23-25.

 

SOCCER

 

*Christian Garcia scored two goals in Randleman’s 3-2 win over Trinity. Chris Lopez got the other goal for the Tigers. Owen Leonard had two assists and Chris Ayala had one.

 

*J.J. DeNamur scored three goals as Uwharrie Charter beat Wheatmore 5-2. Israel Jaramillo had a goal and two assists. Baylon Moore scored a goal and Caleb Golden had an assist.

 

Hayden Hemming and Kooper Grant scored the Wheatmore goals. Hunter Boyles had an assist.

 

*Carlos Gonzalez scored the goal in Asheboro’s 2-1 loss to Ledford. Gerrardo Chi had the assist.

 

*Chris Ayala and Garcia each scored two goals in Randleman’s 5-0 win over West Davidson. Ramiro Vences got the other goal. Leonard had three assists while Jorge Hernandez and Garcia each had one.

 

*Alexander Arce and Gonzalez scored the goals in Asheboro’s 2-0 win over Montgomery Central. Ozmar Martinez and Tyler Smith had the assists. 

 

*Fernando Hernandez and David Lopez each scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 5-2 win over Uwharrie Charter. Brandon Tyl got the other goal. Hernandez had two assists and Jonathan Lopez had one.

 

DeNamur scored both Uwharrie Charter goals. Rowley Cordier and Loan Rife had the assists.

 

*Garcia scored both goals in Randleman’s 2-1 win over Southwestern Randolph that clinched the PAC-7 title for the Tigers. Leonard had an assist.

 

David Lopez got the Southwestern Randolph goal, with Tyl providing the assist.

 

TENNIS

 

*In the 2-A dual team state playoffs:

 

— No. 7 seed and unbeaten Providence Grove earned a first-round bye, but suffered its first defeat in 14 matches in the second round in a 5-1 loss to No. 23 Newton-Conover.

 

— No. 16 Southwestern Randolph won a first-round match with No. 17 North Surry 5-2 before losing in the second round to top-seeded Shelby 6-0. SWR finished the season 13-6.

 

*Asheboro’s Blair Thomas qualified for the individual 3-A state tournament.
