Teams vie for position as conference tournaments near

Heading into the final week of regular season basketball before the conference tournaments begin, teams are jockeying to find the best landing spot for success. Here’s a look at highlights from those efforts last week:

 

Boys Basketball

— Jerquarius Stanback led the way with 30 points as Asheboro walloped Ledford 93-47. Four other Blue Comets placed in double figures: Camden Walker had 19 points, Osiris Rodriguez had 14, Elijah Woodle 12 and Jalial Timmons 10.

— Dominic Payne scored 36 points in Trinity’s 79-51 throttling of Providence Grove. Brandon Campbell provided 14 points and Evan Stepp had 10.

— Nicah Taylor scored 22 points to lead a balanced effort in Eastern Randolph’s 80-70 win over Southwestern Randolph. Timothy Brower and Julian Brooks each had 20 points.

Marcus Robertson led Southwestern Randolph with 25 points. Nathan Ellis scored 19 points and Brayden Chapman had 13.

— Greg Price and Tyshaun Goldston each had 18 points in Randleman’s 69-50 victory over Uwharrie Charter. Jireh Price added 15 points.

Aaron Smith led Uwharrie Charter with 20 points. Braedon Lamb had 11 points.

— Josh Adkins scored 13 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 51-24 win over Wheatmore. Nathan Ellis and Robertson each had 11 points.

— Taylor scored 17 points in Eastern Randolph’s 61-40 win over Uwharrie Charter. Brower contributed 13 points and Brooks had 12.

Lamb led Uwharrie Charter with 18 points and Smith had 11.

 

Girls Basketball

— Laurel Bernhardt scored 10 points in Providence Grove’s 63-23 pounding of Trinity. Asia Steverson had 9 points and Mailey Way added 8.

— Bella Byman and Audra Petty each scored 21 points in Randleman’s 64-46 win over Uwharrie Charter. Gracie Beane scored 10 points.

Nevaeh Staples led Uwharrie Charter with 16 points and Chloe Painter added 8.

— Caressa King and Jordin George each scored 17 points as Southwestern Randolph overwhelmed Eastern Randolph 59-23. Maddie Strider contributed 14 points.

Mirianna Corea led Eastern Randolph with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

— Kenly Whitaker posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in Eastern Randolph’s 52-27 rout of Graham. Ziera Watson also had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Katelyn Brown scored 11 points while Callie Craven had 9 points and 11 rebounds.

— Byman scored 19 points while Beane had 17 points and 5 steals as Randleman beat Providence Grove 62-45. Chenleigh Robinson added 10 points.

— Staples scored 20 points and Painter had 14 in Uwharrie Charter’s 68-46 win over Eastern Randolph.

Ziera Watson led ER with 15 points and Kenly Whitaker had 14.

 

Girls Swimming

— Asheboro’s Maci Columbia finished 10th in both the 100 breaststroke and 500 free in the 3-A state meet.

— Uwharrie Charter’s Morgan Becker took second in the 100 free and 200 free at the 1-A/2-A state championship meet.

 

Boys Indoor Track

— Randleman’s Amari Ferdna was seventh in the triple jump at the 1-A/2-A state championship meet.

— Asheboro’s Lance Everhart was third in the high jump, pole vault and long jump at the 3-A state championship meet.

 

Wrestling

— Braxton Walker of Randleman won the 2-A Mideast Regional championship at 190 pounds, Lorenzo Alston of Uwharrie Charter won at 150 in the 1-A East Regional, Uwharrie Charter’s Carson Robinson won at 157 in the 1-A East Regional, Uwharrie Charter’s Alek Millikan won at 165 pounds in the 1-A East Regional and Uwharrie Charter’s Jaden Maness won at 215 in the 1-A East Regional. Winners from Trinity in the 2-A Midwest Regional were Spencer May (120), Levi Dennis (132), Jaden Allred (138) and Gavin Hardister at 215.

The top four in each weight class advanced to the state tournament.

Other qualifiers from 1-A/2-A dual team state champion Uwharrie Charter in 1-A include Ethan Hines (second, 106), Caleb Saldana (third, 113), Brennan Worrell (fourth, 120), Jack McArthur (second, 132), Jair Ulloa (second, 138), Caden Bond (third, 175) and Devonte Harrison (third, 285).

Eastern Randolph qualifiers from the 1-A East were David Lambright (fourth, 126), Maddox Carson (fourth, 215) and  Joshua Watson (fourth, 106).

Other qualifiers from Randleman were Alex Raymundo (third, 106), Kolby Garner (second, 138), and Jesus Garcia (third, 144).

Qualifiers from SW Randolph in the 2-A Mideast were Janaskel Perez Mortera (fourth, 113), Michael Jaimes (third, 138), Erick Lopez Rabadan (second, 165) and Jose Flores (second, 215).

Other qualifiers from Trinity in the 2-A Midwest were Aiden Burkholder (third, 106), Edgar Vasquez (second, 113), Brayden Hall (second, 126), Charles Schaefer (second, 144) and Lawson Coltrane (third, 165), Baron Justice (second, 150), and, and Joseph Trahan (third, 285), and Xavier Horton (fourth, 190).

Qualifiers from Wheatmore in the 2-A Midwest were Trey Swaney (second, 138) and Zack Starkweather (third, 150).

Asheboro’s Oscar Zelaya was fourth in the 3-A Midwest Regional.
