SWR’s Crutchfield racks up 32 strikeouts in pair of wins

Some stellar pitching performances dominated the action last week. Here’s a recap.

 

*Skylar Pugh and Ayanna Mears each had four RBIs as Eastern Randolph pounded Randleman 17-6. Mears had two doubles among her three hits. Pugh smashed a home run and pitched 2/3 of an inning. Lanie McDaniel also had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and two RBIs. Addie Flinchum got the win with 5 1/3 innings of relief, striking out 11.

 

*Haleigh Thompson and Chloe Eudy each got two hits in Southwestern Randolph's 16-0, three-inning win over Trinity. Alisa Harris and Thompson combined on the perfect game, striking out all nine batters.

 

*Emma Mazzarone hurled a shutout with 13 strikeouts as Providence Grove beat Wheatmore 10-0. Callie Lambert had three hits, including a home run and double, and three RBIs. Maddie Flinchum and Gracie Smith each had two hits.

 

*Kynley Brewer had two hits and two RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 10-0 win over Asheboro. Gracie Smith also got two hits. Victoria Jennings had a hit and two RBIs. Molly Bulla threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

 

*Mazzarone hurled a shutout with 17 strikeouts and also smashed a grand slam in Providence Grove’s 6-0 win over Jordan-Matthews. Lambert doubled twice and drove in a run. Kaylie St. John got a pair of hits.

 

*Macie Crutchfield overpowered North Davidson with 18 strikeouts as Southwestern Randolph romped to an 8-0 win. Maddie Smith had three hits and three RBIs for the Cougars. Maddie Varner had two hits and two RBIs.

 

*Carmen Turgeon collected three hits, including two doubles, and had four RBIs in Wheatmore’s 17-7 romp over Southeast Guilford. She also pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts. Arielle Turgeon got two hits, including a double, with three RBIs. Skylar Pittman had two hits and an RBI. Samantha Bugg had a hit and two RBIs. Kylie Hemric doubled in a run.

 

*McDaniel went 4-for-6 with 3 RBIs as Eastern Randolph won a 13-10, nine-inning slugfest with Southern Alamance. Flinchum had three hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Ziera Watson got two hits and 3 RBIs. Dori Luther had two hits, including a triple.

 

*Sarah Norman pitched a shutout as Randleman beat Northern Guilford 3-0.

 

*Crutchfield took a no-hitter into the seventh before finishing  with a one-hitter and 14 strikeouts as Southwestern Randolph shut out Providence Grove 5-0. Alley Lowe had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Caressa King got two hits, including a double, and an RBI. 

 

Devin Kelly singled to break up the no-hitter. Mazzarone allowed seven hits and struck out 11.

 

SOCCER

 

*Jaira Arellano, a freshman, scored a hat trick as Asheboro downed Southwestern Randolph 4-2. Natasha Mederos tallied the other goal. Natalie Flores had two assists and Madison Luck one. Carlisle Dozier had a busy night with 19 saves.

 

*Taryn Waugh and Sarah Majors got the goals in Providence Grove’s 2-1 win over Southeast Guilford. Caroline Duvall and Noelle Swaim had the assists while Jenny Banuelos made five saves.

 

*Summer Bowman scored four goals as Wheatmore routed Ragsdale 9-0. Ellie Garrison tallied three goals while Natalie Bowman and Mikalah Wells had one each. The Warriors amassed 52 steals, with Garrison’s 11 leading the way. Natalie Bowman took the Warriors’ eight corner kicks.

 

GOLF

 

*Asheboro’s David Elliott and Luke Payne shared medalist honors with scores of 38 as the Blue Comets won a four-team match at Asheboro Municipal.

 

TENNIS

 

*Connor Kelly, Kearns Trotter, Reece Poet and Braydon Till won in singles as Southwestern Randolph downed Wheatmore 7-2.
