SWR, UCA netters pile up impressive victories

Volleyball teams from Southwestern Randolph and Uwharrie Charter Academy reeled off impressive wins in conference play last week. Meanwhile, Asheboro’s soccer team won a pair of close games and SWR’s soccer team routed another foe behind Fernando Hernandez’s 5-goal outing. Here’s a look at those and other high-lights from around the county.

VOLLEYBALL

*Madelyn Smith had 18 kills and 16 digs as Southwestern Randolph held off Randleman 20-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-16, 15-13. Riley Key had 15 kills and 3 blocks. Gracie Hodgin added 13 kills and 8 digs. Raegan LeRoy had 35 assists and 13 digs. Coley Shiflet had 34 digs.

Camden Scott led Randleman with 18 kills and 17 digs. Camryn Vickery had 42 assists and 24 digs. Haley Hinshaw had 13 kills and 9 digs. Ava Jones had 11 digs, 2 kills and 2 aces while Mollie Hall had 8 kills. Haleigh Baity had 5 kills and 6 digs. Karli Kennington had 26 digs and 2 aces. Kadie Green had 11 digs.

*Lizah Moore had 10 kills, 5 blocks, 4 digs and an assist in Uwharrie Charter's 25-14, 26-24, 25-17 sweep of Trinity. Chloe Painter had 9 kills, 25 assists, 6 digs and 3 blocks. Kenzie Hill had 18 digs, 5 kills, 3 blocks and an assist.

Kaitlyn McCoy led Trinity with 13 kills, 22 digs and an assist. Sarabeth Johnson had seven kills. Avalynn Johnson had 11 digs and 23 assists. Faith Powell had 12 digs and Mya Hooker had a pair of blocks.

Taryn Waugh had eight kills in Providence Grove’s 25-14, 25-10, 23-25, 25-21 loss to Ledford. Mailey Way had 25 digs and Riley Mazzarone had 23 assists.

*Addie Flinchum led the way with 16 kills as Eastern Randolph beat Wheatmore 25-17, 21-25, 26-24, 25-18. Kenly Whitaker had 38 assists, Kaylee Courtemanche had 18 digs, Logann Beaver had 7 aces and 4 blocks.

*Ellen Long had 16 kills and a pair of blocks in Asheboro’s 25-10, 25-22, 16-25, 25-11 loss to Oak Grove. Sion Murrain had 13 kills and 8 digs. Anna-Grace LeRoy had 19 assists, 2 aces and 2 digs. Piper Davidson had 15 digs.

*Key and Smith both had 13 kills in Southwestern Randolph's 25-16, 25-10, 25-15 win over Eastern Randolph. Hodgin had 12 kills. Raegan LeRoy had 25 assists while Shiflet had 22 digs and 2 aces.

*McCoy pounded 21 kills while Sarabeth Johnson had 18 kills and 12 digs as Trinity beat Providence Grove 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18. Natalie Franko had 7 kills and 7 blocks. Avalynn Johnson had 41 assists and 11 digs. Katelyn Hill had 26 digs. Eva Porter had 11 digs and 2 aces. Hooker had five kills.

Mazzarone got her 1,000th career assist for Providence Grove.

*Moore had 14 kills, 6 blocks and a dig in Uwharrie Charter's 25-16, 25-8, 25-21 sweep of Randleman. Painter contributed 20 assists, 8 kills, 6 digs, an ace and a block. Caroline Way had 7 kills, 3 digs, 2 assists, 2 aces and a block.

Scott led Randleman with eight kills. Hinshaw had 5 kills and Hall got 4. Vickery had 16 assists. Kennington, Scott and Vickery all had nine digs.

SOCCER

*Carlos Gonzalez got the goal with an assist from Diego Bustamante in Asheboro’s 1-0 win over West Iredell.

*Fernando Hernandez scored five goals as Southwestern Randolph overwhelmed North Stanly 10-0. Bernadino Zuniga and Kaleb Freeman each scored two goals while Daniel Arellano had one. Brandon Tyl and Jonathan Lopez each had two assists. Diego Matias, Gustavo Garcia and Hernandez all had one assist.

*Hayden Hemming scored both goals in Wheatmore’s 9-2 loss to Southwest Guilford.

*Bustamante scored both goals in a 2-1 win over West Forsyth. Gonzalez had an assist.

TENNIS

*Sammie Parks, Lindsi Brown, Larson Kelly and Bethany Latham won singles matches in Southwestern Randolph's 6-3 win over Wheatmore. The teams of Parks/Kelly and Emily Hamilton/Latham won in doubles.
