Sports Roundup: Southwestern volleyball picks up where it left off

Here’s a look at some local prep sports highlights not on a gridiron, including a 2-0 start for defending volleyball state champions Southwestern Randolph.

 

VOLLEYBALL

 

* Haley Pease had 7 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces in Southwestern Randolph’s season-opening 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19 win over Wheatmore. Lucy Lockwood and Taylor Richardson both had six kills for the Cougars. 

 

Madelyn Smith led the way with 14 kills while Gracie Hodgin had 9 kills and 6 aces in Southwestern Randolph’s 25-14, 25-15, 25-8 win over Asheboro. Raegan LeRoy had 21 assists and 4 digs.

 

*Several players had big games as Asheboro opened the season by sweeping past Trinity 25-19, 25-17, 25-14. Piper Davidson contributed 2 aces, 8 kills, 2 blocks and 12 digs. Blue Comets setter Kaylen Nance had 23 assists, 2 aces and 2 kills. Sarah Ann Hildreth had 6 kills, 3 aces and a block. Ellen Long had 5 kills and 4 blocks.

 

Sarabeth Johnson led Trinity with 9 kills and 4 aces. Kaitlyn McCoy had 7 kills and 4 digs. Madison Burgiss was credited with 23 assists while Ella Johnson got 7 digs and an ace.

 

* Emma Mazzarone knocked in 12 kills in Providence Grove’s 25-17, 25-21, 16-25, 15-25, 15-9 loss to Ledford. Gracey Menscer had 26 assists, Paige Needham had 10 kills, Mailey Way had 25 digs and Dyyanna Wade had 6 kills and 7 blocks.

 

* Chloe Dixon pounded 21 kills and collected 15 digs as Randleman outlasted Asheboro 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 15-8. Karli Kennington had 27 digs and 5 aces, Kenzie Roach had 23 assists and 4 aces, and Gabi Carter had 7 kills and 11 digs. 

 

Kaylen Nance led Asheboro with 22 assists, 4 kills and 3 aces. Ellen Long got 9 kills, 5 aces and 4 blocks.

 

* Johnson and McCoy each had six kills as Trinity overwhelmed Thomasville 25-3, 25-7, 25-2. Katelyn Hill got 17 aces.

 

* Menscer had 22 assists and Way got 22 digs in Providence Grove’s 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 win over Southern Guilford. Mazzarone had 12 kills and Needham had 10.

 

* Kynnedi Routh led the way with 11 kills and 21 digs in Wheatmore’s 21-25, 28-26, 25-18, 27-25 victory over Oak Grove. Taylor Richardson contributed 10 kills, 12 digs, 2 assists, 2 aces and a block. Haley Greene had 20 assists and 7 digs.

 

* Lizah Moore had 10 kills and 4 blocks in Uwharrie Charter's 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 win over Richmond. Dacia Lowery had 9 kills and 4 blocks for the Eagles. Chloe Painter had 5 kills, 4 aces, 9 assists and 4 digs.

 

* McCoy had 9 aces and 7 kills in Trinity’s 25-4, 25-8, 25-4 rout of Thomasville. Johnson had 11 aces and 5 kills while Karrington Batten had 10 kills. Burgiss got 16 assists.

 

SOCCER

 

* Diego Bustamante had two goals and Tyler Smith had two assists in Asheboro’s 6-0 win over Trinity.

 

* Christian Ortiz scored two goals in Asheboro’s 8-1 win over Southwestern Randolph. Daniel Gutierrez and Cristian Cruz each had a pair of assists. 

 

* Ortiz and Cruz scored the goals in the Blue Comets’ 2-1 win over Jordan-Matthews.

 

* Riley Queen and Luke Beasley each tallied two goals in Wheatmore’s 5-0 thumping of Lexington.

 

* Danny Palma scored a hat trick and Carlos Parroquin tallied a pair of goals in Uwharrie Charter’s 7-0 win over Chatham Charter. Israel Jaramillo had four assists for the Eagles.

 

 

GOLF

 

* Asheboro’s Salem Lee shot a 1-under-par 35 at Whispering Pines River Course to earn medalist honors in a match against Oak Grove and Union Pines.

 

* Lee also shot a 76 in an 18-hole event, the Asheboro Invitational at Pinewood Country Club.

 

TENNIS

 

* Anna Money, Audrey Frazier, Allie Frazier, Noelle Swaim, Patience Keller and Caroline Tidwell swept the singles in Providence Grove’s 9-0 win over East Davidson. The teams of Allie Frazier/Money, Yvette Gomez/Lauren Garland and Alisa Shaw/Elizabeth Shoe took the doubles.
