Sports Roundup: Post 45 picks up four more victories

AMERICAN LEGION

 

*Tyler Parks had two hits and two RBIs in Post 45’s 8-2 win over Mocksville-Davie. Braylen Hayes contributed two hits and an RBI. Tanner Marsh also had two hits, including a triple. Post 45 jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

 

Braxton Walker scattered five hits and struck out 11 with one walk in five innings. Robert Garner and Caleb Stickle each pitched one inning of relief.

 

*Parks was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs as Post 45 beat Wayne County 6-4 at Campbell University. Carter Brown had two hits and an RBI. 

 

Samuel Asbill started and went four innings — giving up three earned runs — to get the win. Austin Lemons pitched two shutout innings with three strikeouts. Marsh closed it out in the seventh and got the save.

 

*Marsh smashed a two-run homer and a run-scoring double in Post 45’s 4-3 win over Rowan County. Hayes added an RBI double. Post 45 triumphed despite hitting into a triple play in the first inning.

 

Drew Harmon used a double play to escape a first-inning jam and went four innings to pick up the win. Garner pitched two innings and Hunter Atkins closed it out in the seventh to get the save.

 

*Marsh and Atkins smashed back-to-back home runs in Post 45’s 10-0 win over Greensboro to open Area III Northern Division play. Atkins finished with three hits and Marsh had two. Brown, Hayes and Parks all had two hits. Parks drove in a run.

 

Drake Purvis struck out nine in four innings and got the win. Parks pitched the final two innings, striking out two.

 

BROOKS BRANNON

 

*The former Randleman star went 5-for-18 with two home runs in four games for the FCL Red Sox. Brannon homered on June 12 and June 16. He had two hits in the June 12 and June 15 games.

 

Brannon, a ninth-round selection of the Boston Red Sox in 2022, ended the week with a .296 batting average, 3 home runs and 12 RBIs for the season so far. 

 

ZOOKEEPERS

 

*Tyler McPeak smashed a three-run homer in the Zookeepers’ 9-4 win over the Martinsville Mustangs. Jay Dillard was 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and an RBI. Trey Way had a double and an RBI.

 

Grant Aycock scattered five hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out seven in five innings to get the win.

 

*Alex Lodise lined a walk-off single as the Zookeepers beat the Florence Flamingos 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Jacob Dienes threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts over six innings. Garrett Kangas got the win with one inning of scoreless relief.

 

* McPeak was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, leading the Zookeepers to a 5-1 win and a sweep of their doubleheader with Florence. Cole Laskowski went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Todd Hudson had two hits and an RBI. Jacob Halford allowed one hit and a run with four strikeouts in four innings. Ethan Snyder pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

 

SOFTBALL

 

*Toby Strider is the new coach at Southwestern Randolph, replacing Chad Whitson, who resigned after five seasons. Strider was on the varsity staff for the just-completed 2023 season and has coached at the middle school level.

 

Whitson was 65-22 during his tenure and the Cougars won or shared three conference championships. They were 22-2 and reached the fourth round of the 2-A state playoffs in 2023. He was named Piedmont Athletic Conference coach of the year. In 2021, he was the Mid-Piedmont Conference coach of the year.

 

WOMEN’S  BASKETBALL

 

*Southwestern Randolph won the Scholar Athlete Award from the NCHSAA in recognition of the team’s 3.88 grade point average.

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

 

*Former Providence Grove star Jonathan Foust has committed to Lynchburg University after spending the last two seasons at Davidson-Davie Community College. Foust averaged 8.6 points and was second on the team with 56.9 percent field shooting in his sophomore season.
