RANDLEMAN — The Insurance Journal reported last week that Jeffrey Martin Webster of Jamestown was charged with 18 counts, including forgery and embezzlement by an insurance producer, after investigators with the state Department of Insurance examined evidence from 2024 and 2025, the DOI said in a bulletin.
Webster is the owner of Webster Insurance Agency in Archdale, near Greensboro.
Webster is also the head varsity softball coach for the Randleman Tigers. He began his eighth year this season, but he has for now been replaced by assistant coach Josh Ashby.
“I have been advised not to say anything about that for the simple fact we don’t know what the truth is,” RHS Athletic Director Jake Smith said. “Josh is taking over as interim coach.”
Smith did say the team has continued to enjoy success on the field, taking a 5-1 record into action this week.
“Whatever is best for the girls, we’re going to move forward,” Smith said. “The girls are resilient. They seem to be playing well.”
Webster is out on bond awaiting court action after he was charged with diverting premium payments from four automobile dealerships.
An arrest warrant filed in Randolph County District Court by a DOI investigator reads, “The defendant did as an insurance agent accept premium payment from R&M Automotive Ventures LLC and agree in exchange to bind insurance coverage for R&M Automotive Ventures LLC and instead, did not bind coverage and did keep R&M Automotive Ventures, LLC’s money and embezzle or convert the money to his own use.”
Webster provided forged certificates of insurance to the clients but never secured policies, authorities said, according to the Insurance Journal report.
However, in a statement posted on his agency’s website, Webster said the certificates were incorrect, but the discrepancy was not intentional, and that he was never given a chance to explain before the Feb. 27 arrest.
Webster’s online statement in full:
”To be transparent, I wanted to share about the events on Friday, February 27, 2026. I’m aware my record is being circulated via the Internet and people are being left to their own imagination on the details of the charges against me. I want to take this opportunity to share my side of the story, so you are better informed.
“Over the past several months, the NC Department of Insurance conducted an audit of Webster Insurance and Associates, Inc which is not unusual for the Insurance Department to audit insurance agencies or companies. While conducting the audit a discrepancy with issuing certificates of Insurance was discovered, specifically used car automobile dealerships. I was never given the opportunity to explain or clarify these discrepancies.
“Upon leaving for the last time, the auditors indicated that I would be receiving an email with additional questions and may have to go to Raleigh if necessary for a hearing. I never heard anything further from the department until February 27, 2026.
“On that date, The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department came to the office and placed me under arrest for Forgery and Uttering. I was taken to a sub-office of the Insurance Department where I was told if I voluntarily surrendered my license the investigation would end. When I told the investigator I needed to speak with my attorney, I was taken from the meeting and transported to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department where I was held until released on bail.
“The one thing I want to clearly communicate to everyone is there is no evidence that I profited from the certificates that were issued incorrectly. My business remains open and my insurance license remains in effect.
“I hope those of you who know me will understand that I’d never illegally take any money from clients and that judgement will pause until I have been arraigned and tried in court. Until that time, I plan to continue doing what I do, helping people with their insurance needs.”
