Randleman, ER continue winning ways

Randleman outlasted Trinity in overtime to remain unbeaten in league play in the Piedmont Athletic Conference, while Timothy Brower and Nicah Taylor combined for 108 points in two games to push Eastern Randolph into second place. 

Here’s a look at those results and more from last week’s winter sports action.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

*Nathan Ellis scored 27 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 66-55 non-conference win over North Moore. Marcus Robertson added 19 points for the Cougars.

*Timothy Brower erupted for 37 points as Eastern Randolph blew past Providence Grove 104-52. Nicah Taylor had 30 points.

Brady Collins led Providence Grove with 11 points and Stephen Beeson had 10.

*Greg Price scored 24 points to lead three players in double figures as Randleman overcame Trinity 74-69 in overtime. Connor Cassidy had 18 points and Tyshaun Goldston added 16.

Dominic Payne led Trinity with 21 points. Brandon Campbell had 18 points, Jacob Hodges 14 and Walker Parrish 12.

*Taylor was one of four players in double figures with 23 points in Eastern Randolph’s 83-80 win over Grace Christian. Brower had 18 points while Camden Jones had 13. William Stalker had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

*Payne went over 2,000 points for his career in the Bulldogs’ 71-63 victory over Southwestern Randolph. The 6-foot-2 senior had 27 points in the game and is No. 3 all-time in scoring for Trinity. Campbell added 22 points and Hodges had 16.

Nathan Ellis led Southwestern Randolph with 21 points, Robertson had 16 and Brayden Chapman 11.

*Jerquarius Stanback scored 22 points in Asheboro’s 80-57 thumping of Oak Grove. Camden Walker had 20 points and Elijah Woodle added 17.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL       

*Maddie Strider scored 18 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 61-12 rout of North Moore.

*Brooke Ingram scored 20 points and Mailey Way had 14 in Providence Grove’s 58-35 win over Eastern Randolph. 

Ziera Watson led Eastern Randolph with 15 points while Kenly Whitaker had 14 points and 6 rebounds.

*Audra Petty scored 18 points as Randleman overwhelmed Trinity 55-7. Bella Byman had 12 points and Chenleigh Robinson contributed 11.

*Nevaeh Staples scored 13 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 37-30 win over Wheatmore.

*Petty posted a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds as Randleman held off Wheatmore 43-39. Robinson had 10 points and 5 steals.

Kynnedi Routh led Wheatmore with 19 points and Brianna Hill had 10.

*Staples scored 15 points, Abbie Gudino had 10 and Sammy Chriscoe had 8 in Uwharrie Charter’s 55-44 win over Providence Grove. 

BOYS WRESTLING

*Trinity walloped Reidsville 69-12 and Burns 60-21 in the first rounds of the 2-A dual team state playoffs. Aiden Burkholder, Edgar Vasquez, Brayden Hall, Baron Justice, Zane Schloemer, Lawson Coltrane, Xavier Horton, Gavin Hardister and Joseph Trahan were all 2-0 for the Bulldogs. Jadn Allred, Spencer May, Charles Schaefer and Kendall Miles were all 1-0.

The top-seeded Bulldogs will face Lincolnton in the third round on Wednesday.

*Wheatmore fell 42-26 to West Lincoln in the first round of the 2-A dual team state playoffs.

*Uwharrie Charter cruised past North Rowan 60-24 and Northeast Carolina Prep 53-30 in the first two rounds of the 1-A dual team state playoffs. Caleb Saldana, Brennan Worrell, Brandon Jordan, Jack McArthur, Aiden Foster, Lorenzo Alston, Carson Robinson, Alek Millikan and Caden Bond were all 2-0 for UCA. Jair Ulloa and Michael Shropshire were 1-0.

The Eagles take on Albemarle in the third round on Wednesday.

*Eastern Randolph fell 40-33 to Northeast Carolin Prep in the first round of the 1-A dual team state playoffs.

*Alexis Alvarez, Sammy Salinas, Oscar Zelaya, Marco Benitez, Alex Patino, and Quentez Butler won for Asheboro in a Blue Comets’ 42-33 loss to Page.

 

GIRLS SWIMMING

*Asheboro’s Maci Columbia won the 500 free and the 100 breaststroke in the Mid-Piedmont Conference championship meet.

 

BOYS SWIMMING

*Wheatmore’s Colten Osborne won the 100 free in a meet with the Forsythe Home Educators, Burlington Spartans and Phoenix Academy Firebirds.
