Local teams off to hot start in first round of playoffs

The volleyball conference tournaments are over and the playoffs have begun, with five local teams playing first-round action on Saturday:

3-A playoffs
— No. 17 Asheboro lost to No. 16 St. Stephens 25-21, 24-26, 25-13, 25-21.

2-A playoffs
— No. 3 Southwestern Randolph defeated No. 30 Lincoln Charter 25-11, 25-17, 25-7.

— No. 12 Randleman defeated No. 21 Community School of Davidson 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16.

— No. 16 Trinity defeated No. 17 Forbush 17-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-23.

1-A playoffs
— No. 5 Uwharrie Charter defeated No. 25 Bethany 25-7, 25-9, 25-8. 

— No. 22 Eastern Randolph defeated No. 11 Hiwassee Dam 22-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-14.

VOLLEYBALL

 

PAC TOURNAMENT

First round

*Chloe Painter had 13 kills, 16 assists and 7 digs as No. 2 Uwharrie Charter swept No. 7 Wheatmore 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 in the first round of the PAC Tournament. Addie Duggins had 6 aces and 8 digs. Lizah Moore had 8 kills, 5 digs and a block.

 

*Camden Scott had 18 kills, 19 digs and 2 blocks as No. 3 Wheatmore beat No. 6 Providence Grove 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-14 in the first round of the PAC Tournament. Haley Hinshaw had 11 kills and 14 digs. Ava Jones and Haleigh Baity each had nine kills. Camryn Vickery had 50 assists, 8 digs and 3 aces. Mollie Hall had 6 kills and 2 blocks. Jones also had 3 aces and 2 blocks.

 

*Kaitlyn McCoy dominated play with 25 kills and 24 digs as No. 4 Trinity held off No. 5 Eastern Randolph 25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23 in the first round of the PAC Tournament. Karrington Batten had 13 kills and 3 blocks. Sarabeth Johnson had 11 kills, 15 digs and 2 aces. Avalynn Johnson had 49 assists.

 

Addie Flinchum led Eastern Randolph with 24 kills. Logann Beaver had 12 kills and 2 aces. Kenly Whitaker had 40 assists and Marianna Corea had 4 blocks.

 

Semifinals

*Hinshaw had 15 kills and 25 digs as Randleman won a marathon 25-22, 21-25, 33-31, 14-25, 15-10 win over Uwharrie Charter in the PAC Tournament semifinals. Scott had 13 kills, 16 digs and 3 aces. Vickery had 43 assists, 11 digs and 2 aces. Karli Kennington had 29 digs while Kadie Green had 18. Jones had 9 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Baity 7 kills and Hall had 2.

 

Moore had 15 kills, 5 blocks and a dig for Uwharrie Charter. Kayden Faglier added 14 kills and 6 blocks. Duggins had 14 digs and 4 aces.

 

*Gracie Hodgin had 10 kills and 2 aces as No. 1 seed Southwestern Randolph swept Trinity 25-13, 25-14, 25-17 in the semifinals of the PAC Tournament. Madelyn Smith had 7 kills and 5 blocks. Riley Key had 6 kills and 3 blocks. Jade Matias had 6 kills while Lileigh Payne had a pair of aces.

 

Sarabeth Johnson led Trinity with 6 kjlls and 8 digs. Batten also had 6 kills while McCoy had 5 kills and 9 digs. Avery Moffitt added five kills. Faith Powell had 8 digs and 2 aces, Avalynn Johnson had 21 assists.

 

Finals

* Gracie Hodgin and Madelyn Smith each had 11 kills while Riley Key had 10 as Southwestern Randolph beat Randleman 25-15, 26-24, 25-23 to win PAC Tournament championship. Hodgin also had four aces. Coley Shiflet led in digs with 18 and Madelyn Smith had 12. Molly Smith had 19 assists and LeRoy added 15.

 

Scott and Hinshaw had seven kills each for Randleman. Baity had 5 kills while Hall added 3. Vickery had 19 assists and 6 digs. Kennington had 18 digs and Green had 9.

 

MPC TOURNAMENT

 

Semifinals

*Sion Murrain had 10 kills, 12 digs and 3 aces as second-seeded Asheboro beat No. 3 Ledford 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 in the semifinals of the Mid-Piedmont Conference tournament. Ellen Long also had 10 kills along with an ace. Lia George had 7 kills and 15 digs. Piper Davidson had 22 digs and 5 aces. Eva Vuncannon had 18 assists, 6 digs and an ace. Anna Grace LeRoy had 9 assists, 5 digs and 2 aces.

 

Finals

*Long had 12 kills and 4 blocks in Asheboro’s 18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 23-25 loss to Oak Grove in the MPC Tournament championship game.

 

SOCCER

 

*Joseph Avina and David Dominguez both had two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 7-0 win over Eastern Randolph. Gadiel Negrete, Kevin Garcia and Fernando Hernandez all had one goal. Dominguez and Hernandez both had a pair of assists. Omar Moreno, Jonathan Lopez and Brandon Tyl all had one assist.

 

*Edwin Smith and Diego Bustamante both scored two goals in Asheboro’s 6-1 win over Central Davidson. Arath Gomez and Tyler Smith both had one goal. Bustamante had two assists while Alexander Perez, Ozmar Martinez, Daniel Gutierrez and Smith each had one.

 

*Owen Leonard scored two goals in Randleman’s 5-2 win over Providence Grove. Aaron Vasquez, Francisco Vences and Christian Garcia, who had two assists, scored the other goals. Valentin Bringas, Chris Lopez and Vences each had one assist.

 

*Hernandez had a big night with four goals as Southwestern Randolph beat Wheatmore 8-1. Kaleb Freeman, Joseph Avina, Adam Roberts and Dominguez all scored one goal. Pedro Ortiz and Hernandez both had two assists. Janaksel Perez, Lopez and Freeman all had one assist.

 

*Alan Alcantara, Carlos Gonzalez and Bustamante all had one goal in Asheboro’s 4-3 loss to North Davidson. Bustamante and Martinez each had an assist.

 

*J.J. DeNamur scored the goal and Israel Jaramillo had the assist in Uwharrie Charter’s 2-1 loss to Eastern Randolph.

 

TENNIS

 

*Sammie Parks, Lindsi Brown, Bethany Latham and Caroline Farlow won in singles as No. 16 Southwestern Randolph beat No. 17 North Surry 5-2 in the 2-A dual team state playoffs. The doubles team of Latham/Farlow also won. The Cougars advanced to play Shelby in the second round.

 

*Carmen Turgeon won in singles as No. 22 Wheatmore fell 8-1 to No. 11 West Stokes in the first round of the 2-A dual team state playoffs.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

 

*Providence Grove freshman Laurel Bernhardt was the girls’ overall winner in the PAC championship at Wheatmore and helped her team to a narrow two-point win over Uwharrie Charter.

 

Rounding out the top five were Jazmin Palma (Uwharrie Charter), Caroline DuVall (Providence Grove) and Kayla Franklin (Trinity).

 

*Wheatmore’s Zach Hazelwood was the boys’ overall winner in the PAC championship and Providence Grove took the team title.

 

Completing the top five were Chris White (Uwharrie Charter), Kelton Shoptaw (Providence Grove), Freddie Mercado (Randleman) and Jedidiah Dake (Randleman).
