In their first showdown of the season, Uwharrie Charter toppled Southwestern Randolph in volleyball. Here are some key highlights from that match and other high school sports results from last week.
Volleyball
■ Carly Rush posted a double-double of 12 kills and 19 digs in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) win over Southwestern Randolph. Caroline Way had 21 kills and 4 digs. Sadie Upchurch had 22 digs and 3 aces. Sydney Hayes had 6 kills and 2 blocks. Alyvia Spinks got 7 kills while Nyasia Wharton had 6. Emory Johnson had 35 assists and 7 digs. Gracie Smith had six digs.
Bailey Blackmon had 7 kills and 3 blocks for Southwestern Randolph. Cheyenne Dixon had six kills. Payson Hammer had 3 kills and 2 blocks. Mary Kathryn Coletrane had 10 assists and Hailey Brown got 9.
■ Lia George had 4 kills and 8 digs in Asheboro’s 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16) loss to Northern Guilford. Emma Kate Forester had 4 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. Adalyn Scherer had 4 kills and 4 blocks. Emma Little had 10 digs while Maliyah Brady had 4 blocks. Eva Vuncannon had 5 assists and 6 digs. Kailey Brown had 5 assists and 4 digs.
■ Roxanne Davis blasted 15 kills to go along with 2 blocks and 2 aces as Eastern Randolph outlasted Northwood 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-12). Mirianna Corea had 9 kills, 3 blocks and an ace. Callie Craven had 28 assists, 3 blocks and an ace. Vivian Underwood had 35 digs and 3 aces. Katelyn Brown had 13 digs and an ace. Raegan Beaver got 20 digs and a pair of aces.
■ Avalynn Johnson had 32 assists, 12 digs and 4 aces in Trinity’s 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-7) rout of East Davidson. Hayli Cox had 8 kills, and 2 aces. Dakota Odell had 10 kills and a block. Avery Moffitt had 14 kills and Charlee Phillips had 12 digs. Mya Hooker had 6 kills and 3 blocks.
■ Way had 20 kills and 6 digs in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-22) sweep of North Moore. Rush had 13 kills and 5 digs. Spinks had eight kills. Johnson had 36 assists and 6 digs.
■ Johnson had 27 assists while Moffitt had 17 kills and 5 aces in Trinity’s 3-1 (19-25, 25-6, 25-21, 25-14) win over Providence Grove. Odell had 18 kills while Charlee Phillips had 17 digs. Cox added 12 kills, 3 blocks and 6 aces.
Soccer
■ Seth Johnson scored three goals while Kevin Bautista and Sam Peters got two each as Providence Grove trounced Eastern Guilford 9-0. Oscar Bautista and Criss Cansino scored the other goals. Aldo Rubio and Johnson both had two assists. Kevin Bautista and Cansino both had an assist. Rubio made six saves.
■ Carter Queen and Easton Dewitt got two goals each, leading Wheatmore’s 9-0 rout of South Davidson. Byron Figueroa, Brodie Bates, Eli Bailey and Laurel Ortiz got the other goals. Queen had three assists while Ortiz, Figueroa and Balderas each had one. Logan Hughes made three saves.
■ Easton Dewitt scored the goal and Carter Queen got the assist as Wheatmore fell 3-1 to Southeast Guilford. Hughes made 16 saves.
■ Fernando Hernandez had three goals in the Cougars’ 8-0 rout of North Davidson. Griffin Hall added two goals and Aaron Avina, Yael Rebollar-Ortiz and Chris Betancourt added one each. Betancourt and Hernandez scored the other goals. Betancourt and Hernandez each had two assists. Braydon Til, Hall and Avina all had assists.
■ Kevin Bautista and Peters each scored three goals as Providence Grove blanked Central Davidson 9-0. Johnson added two goals and Oscar Bautista had one. Giovanny Arellano, Ero Gonzalez, Aldo Rubio, Johnson and Bautista had assists. Rubio made five saves.
■ Cayden Pugh scored three goals as Trinity beat Southern Guilford 5-2. Luis Vasquez and Jason Alvarez each had one. Robert Lopez and Mario Garcia had assists while Owen Guilliams made nine saves.
Tennis
■ Tatum Wagner, Macey Tew, Annslee Billings and Emma Davidson won in singles as Wheatmore beat Providence Grove 6-3. The teams of Webb/Taylor Webb and Tew/Davidson won doubles matches.
Alisa Shaw, Carly Lambert and Callie Lambert won for Providence Grove.
■ Kayla Neam, Selina Arroyo, Makensie Case and Makenzie Hill won in singles as Trinity beat West Davidson 7-2. The teams of Jacey Wilson/Neam, Carolina Case/Hill and Alexi Austin/Arroyo swept the doubles.
■ Carly Lambert and Reese Davis won in singles as Providence Grove lost 7-2 to Southwestern Randolph.
■ Charlotte Smith, Madalynn Adams, Guadalupe Soto, Delaney Nall and Anson Frazier won in singles as Asheboro beat Jordan-Matthews 8-1. The doubles teams of Smith/Nall, Adams/Soto and Victoria Rivera/Frazier swept their matches.
■ The teams of Smith/Nall and Adams/Frazier won doubles matches in Asheboro’s 7-2 loss to Southeast Guilford.
■ Leah Puckett, Wagner, Webb, Tew, Billings and Davidson won in singles as Wheatmore downed Cornerstone Charter 8-1. The doubles teams of Reagan Stinnett/Makenna Lawrence and Emma Gower/Ava Botts won in doubles.
Boys Cross Country
■ Randleman’s Jedidiah Dake was fifth overall in a four-team meet at Randleman.
Girls Cross Country
■ Randleman’s Reagan Henley was fifth overall in a four-team meet at Randleman.
Girls golf
■ Southwestern Randolph’s Danielle Jaeck was the medalist with a 49 and helped lead the Cougars to victory in
a four-team match with North Moore, Northwood and Eastern Randolph at Siler City Country Club.
Registration open for Steve Welch tournament
ASHEBORO — Registration for the 2025 Steve Welch Fall Classic Golf Tournament is underway.
The 16th annual event is scheduled to be held Sept. 27 and 28 at the Asheboro Municipal Golf Course. The 36-hole stroke play tournament is limited to 68 players with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Golf and lunch is provided Saturday by Hops BBQ. All proceeds will be donated to the DARE program of Randolph County and the Ronald McDonald Home.
