Local Sports Roundup: SWR, AHS soccer finishing strong

Southwestern Randolph continued its dominating play and Asheboro soccer players also had a big week as playoffs near. Here are some of those and other highlights from last week.

Soccer

■ Jake Edwards scored two goals as Wheatmore edged West Davidson 4-3. Easton DeWitt and Laurel Ortiz Sanchez got the other goals. Carter Queen had three assists and Logan Hughes made 22 saves.

■ Braydon Tyl, Aaron Avina, Fernando Hernandez and Yael Rebollar-Ortiz all scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 10-1 win over Eastern Randolph. Chris Betancourt and Homero Aguilar got the other goals. Jonathan Lopez-Degollado, Kevin Garcia, Avina and Betancourt all had two assists. Rebollar-Ortiz and Hernandez both had one assist.

Danilo Perez Perilla scored the ER goal and Alberto Montoyo Rabadan had the assist.

■ Ivan Castaneda, Zamire Bush and Ozmar Martinez all scored two goals as Asheboro walloped Eastern Guilford 11-2. Samuel Paul, Jonathan Guttierrez Alonso, Carlos Gonzalez, Julian Bitti and Jaycole Reyes all had one goal. Gonzalez and Castaneda both had two assists. Jonathan Ortega, Alexander Diaz, William Miranda, Benny Zentella, Guttierrez Alonso and Bitti all had one assist.

■ Jaycole Reyes, Thomas Vazquez Santos, Seongyun Kim, Juan Gil, Alexander Perez, Martinez, Alonso and Gonzalez all scored as Asheboro blanked Northeast Guilford 9-0. Martinez had four assists and Alonso had two. Henry Martinez Cruz and Erik Gervacio each had one assist.

■ Justin Morales, Kevin Bautista and Oscar Bautista scored the goals as Providence Grove beat Wheatmore 3-1. Seth Johnson and Esteban Raya each had an assist. 

Suarez Ortiz scored the Wheatmore goal, assisted by Grayson Carter.

■ Hernandez had a huge night with four goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 6-3 win over Jordan-Matthews. Avina and Rebollar Ortiz scored the other goals. Avina had two assists. Hernandez and Betancourt both had one assist. Jonathan Perez-Dominguez made three saves.

Girls Golf

■ Wheatmore’s Kyndal Kinley shot a 94 and finished 14th in the 3-A West Regional at Pilot Knob Park in Pilot Mountain. That qualified her for the 3-A state tournament, played Monday and Tuesday at Longleaf Golf Club in Southern Pines.

■ Megan Oakley led the way by tying for medalist honors with an 86 and Providence Grove won the 3-A East Regional tournament at Washington Yacht and Country Club in Washington. Adison Johnson shot 94, finishing fourth, and the Patriots outdistanced second-place North Carolina School of Science and Math by six strokes.

The Patriots played in the 3-A state tournament Monday and Tuesday at Longleaf.

■ Danielle Jaeck was sixth overall with a 93 and Southwestern Randolph finished third as a team in the 4-A East Regional. The Cougars advanced to this week’s state tournament.

Tennis

■ Jacey Wilson, Kayla Neam, Salina Arroyo, Carolina Case and Makenzie Hill won in singles as No. 2 Trinity downed No. 10 Goldsboro 5-1 in the third round of the 3-A dual team state playoffs.

Volleyball

■ Caroline Way had 10 kills, 10 digs and 3 aces as No. 2 Uwharrie Charter swept No. 10 Ledford 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-9) in the third round of the state playoffs. Carly Rush had 8 kills, 5 digs and 4 aces. Sadie Upchurch had 26 digs and 3 aces.

■ Hayli Cox had 11 kills but No. 15 Trinity fell to No. 10 Union Academy 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17) in the third round of the state playoffs. Avery Moffitt had 10 kills while Mya Hooker and Dakota Odell each had five. Charlee Phillips had three aces.

■ Hailey Kennedy had 27 assists, surpassing 1,000 for her career as No. 9 Southwestern Randolph toppled No. 1 Bunn 3-2 (11-25, 25-14, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13) in the third round of the state playoffs. Bailey Blackmon had 14 kills and 5 blocks. Cheyenne Dixon had 15 kills and 13 digs. Kinlin Hulin had 9 kills and 5 blocks. Stella Brown had 8 kills and 9 digs. Mary Kathryn Coltrane had 19 assists and Maddie Baker had 22 digs.
