LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: PG boys, WHS girls take control in CCC

Providence Grove entered this week undefeated in Central Carolina Conference boys play and Wheatmore was unbeaten in in CCC girls play. 

Meanwhile, conferences completed their conference swimming meets. Here’s a look at highlights from those and other events from the week.

Boys Basketball 

■  Kaleb Harvey scored 14 points and got 4 steals as Uwharrie Charter downed Eastern Randolph 63-45. Jaxon Mabe had 13 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Kareem Helms had 10 points.

Tyler Gee led Eastern Randolph with 32 points.

■  Will Dabbs scored 26 points and Andrew Thomas had 24 in Providence Grove’s 75-59 win over Wheatmore. Gabe McKoy added 12 points.

Avery Ivey led Wheatmore with 22 points and had 4 assists. Collin Dodd had 15 points while Jordan Starkey had 8 points and 4 assists. Truman Auman had 6 points and 9 rebounds. 

■  Mabe scored 18 points to go along with 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in Uwharrie Charter’s 46-44 loss to Ledford. Helms had 8 points and 7 rebounds.

■  Mabe scored 15 points, had 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals as Uwharrie Charter beat Jordan-Matthews 56-41. Kameron Harvey scored 9 points and Helms had 8 points along with 6 rebounds. Grat Dalton and Kaleb Harvey each had 7 points.

■  Connor Cassidy scored 16 points as Randleman edged Eastern Randolph 55-53. Pacey Wagner added 13 points.

Gee led Eastern Randolph with 27 points and Emmitt Frye had 13.

■  Nirey White scored 19 points and Jewel Barrett-Riggins added 9 in Asheboro’s 69-50 loss to Northeast Guilford.

■  Ivey scored 25 points and had 6 assists in Wheatmore’s 75-44 victory over Trinity. Starkey contributed 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Gavin McPherson and Dodd each scored eight points.

■  Dabbs scored 27 points as Providence Grove beat Thomasville 74-54. Thomas scored 22 points. Cam Jones scored 15 points — all on 3-pointers. The Patriots made 14 3-pointers altogether.

Girls Basketball 

■  Lainey Thomas scored 11 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 42-39 win over Ledford. Nevaeh Staples had 8 points.

■  Thomas scored 14 points and Staples had 13 as Uwharrie Charter downed Eastern Randoph 43-21.

Katelyn Brown led Eastern Randolph with 9 points. 

■  Kaelyn Whitehart led the way with 26 points as Wheatmore raced to a 50-30 win over Providence Grove. Madeline Mullinix scored 11 points and Meredith Partin had 8.

Bailee Mitchell led Providence Grove with 10 points and Laurel Bernhardt had 8.

■  Madison Hill scored a game-high 29 points in Trinity’s 58-46 loss to West Davidson.

■  Kadie Green and Aislyn Laughlin each scored 13 points in Randleman’s 55-29 win over Eastern Randolph. 

Callie Craven led Eastern Randolph with 11 points and Katelyn Brown had 10.

■  Thomas scored 20 points as Uwharrie Charter thumped Jordan-Matthews 68-24. Kayla Brown and Staples each scored 11 points and Hannah Williams added 9.

■  Maddie Strider scored 14 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 52-29 loss to Northwood. Jordin George had nine points.

■  Strider connected on seven 3-pointers, finishing with 27 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in Southwestern Randolph’s 82-26 rout of Jordan-Matthews. George had 18 points and 6 rebounds and Ryleigh Hineline had 9 points.

■  Ady Scherer scored 14 points as Asheboro drubbed Northeast Guilford 48-11. Laneane Scherer added 10 points and Maliyah Brady had 8.

Boys Wrestling 

■  Asheboro finished eighth in the Coach T Memorial Classic at Riverside. Oscar Zelaya (3-0) took first place and Jeffrey Harper (5-1) was third. Quanta McRae (3-2) was fourth. Turcan Kilic was 3-2. Owen Chidester, Jose Martinez and Jonah Lester were 2-2. Dylan Espinoza and Hunter Arroyo were 1-2.

■  Eastern Randolph was fourth and host Providence Grove placed sixth in the Patriot Invitational.

David Lambright (2-0) took first place for Eastern Randolph. Jamie Crabtree (2-1) and Maddox Carson (2-1) were second. Lucas Kennedy (3-1) and Trever Crabtree (2-1) were third. Zeph Dunn (2-2) was fourth. Joshua Watson went 1-2.

Jeremiah Payne (2-1) was second for Providence Grove. Ayden Terwilliger (3-1) came in third. Malachi Combo, Charles Villaggio and Ryan Bullard were all 2-2 and finished fourth. Wyatt Signor was 2-2 while Jeremiah Duffy and Tucker Coble were 1-2.

■  Uwharrie Charter finished third in the Nighthawk Boys Invitational at Northern Guilford. Lorenzo Alston (3-0) took first place. Paxton Kearns (3-1), Michael Hardie (2-1) and Ric Riccardella (2-1) took second. Ayven Virasone Chitavong (3-1), Brennan Worrell (3-1) and Jesse Bowles (3-1) were all third. Maddox Goble and Dakken Rodrigues were 1-2.

■  Uwharrie Charter dominated a tri-match, beating Northwood (74-6) and Central Carolina Academy (70-10). Michael Shropshire, Travis Nobles, Caleb Saldana, Huntley Adcock, Andrew White, Chitavong, Kearns, Worrell, Riccardella, Bowles, and Alston were all 2-0. Rodrigues was 1-0. Maddox Goble and Alvarez were 1-1.

■  Southwestern Randolph beat North Moore 51-27. Ryder Degraff, Owen Pearson, Aaron Rosales, Leland Davis, Tyler Taylor, Dallas Rambo, Carter Horsefield, Rafael Flores and Whyatt Williams won for the Cougars.

■  Landon Hunter, Alex Raymundo, Sanii Bosan and Lloy Bosan won in Randleman’s 57-23 loss to Montgomery Central.

■  Eastern Randolph beat Jordan-Matthews 46-34. Armani Tapia-Sosa, Lambright, Trever Crabtree, Jamie Crabtree, Jaylin Talley, Trevor Young, Jacob Chavis and Carson won for the Wildcats.

■  Trinity routed West Davidson (75-6) and West Cabarrus (64-15) in a tri-match.

Jeven Palmeri, Aiden Burkholder, Stephen Cross, Edgar Vasquez, Omega Edge, Hezekyah Matson, Simeon Hammett, Addam Bernal, Haris Idrees, Anees Khan and Grayson Carroll were all 2-0 for the host Bulldogs. Joseph Trahan was 1-0 and Trent Walker was 1-1.

■  Wheatmore split a tri-match, defeating host Providence Grove (59-24) and losing to Eastern Guilford (56-18). Providence Grove was 0-2, with a 53-19 loss to Eastern Guilford.

Ayden Summers, Dominic Hittepole and Peyton Russo were 2-0 for Wheatmore. Terry Gillespie was 1-0. Dylan Harris, Laythan Brown, Nolan Hammonds, Landon Watkins, Brodie Bates and Andrew Fayne were 1-1.

Aiden Poplin and Ayden Terwilliger were 2-0 for Providence Grove. Jeremiah Payne, Malachi Combo, Charles Villaggio and Ryan Bullard were 1-1.

■ Providence Grove beat Thomasville 54-12. Aiden Poplin, Ayden Terwilliger, Caden Mercado, Matthew Signor, Malachi Combo, Charles Villaggio, Wyatt Signor and Ryan Bullard won for the Patriots.

Girls Wrestling

■  Asheboro’s Alaina Scherer (2-0) took first place in the Nighthawk Girls Invitational at Northern Guilford. Elena Alvarez was fourth. Andreona Thornton was 1-2 and Ganelli Trejo went 1-2.

Uwharrie Charter’s Riley White (3-0) took first place while Avriana Whitfield (2-1) was second.

■  Asheboro split a tri-match, defeating Reagan (24-18) and losing to West Forsyth (66-6).

Scherer was 2-0 for Asheboro. Briana Barrios, Alvarez and Thornton were 1-1.

Boys Indoor Track 

■  Asheboro was fifth in the MLK Invitational at JDL Fast Track. 

Winning events for the Blue Comets were Aaron Tyson (pole vault, triple jump) and Caden Kutschenko (long jump).

Girls Indoor Track 

■  Asheboro was third in the MLK Invitational at JDL Fast Track. 

Winning events for the Blue Comets were Jalaya Showers (55-meter dash), Christy Price (triple jump) and Trynitee Brady (shot put).

Boys Swimming 

■  Uwharrie Charter finished second to Northwood in the Four Rivers Conference championship meet.

■  Randleman finished fourth in the Piedmont Athletic Conference championship meet.

Winning for the Tigers was Tyler Fortson (200-yard individual medley, 500-yard freestyle).

■  Randleman won a non-conference meet with Asheboro, Eastern Randolph, Uwharrie Charter and Southwestern Randolph.

Winning for the Tigers were Cannon Eggleston (200-meter individual medley, 100-meter freestyle) and Tyler Fortson (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke).

Winning for Asheboro were the 200-meter medley relay (Darian Jaimes, Nicholas Greene, Sylar Shoffner, Joshua Prochnau), Prochnau (400-meter freestyle), the 200-meter freestyle relay (Shoffner, Julian Rebollar, Jaimes, Prochnau), Nicholas Greene (100-meter breaststroke) and the 400-meter freestyle relay (Jaimes, Chris Jones, Prochnau, Shoffner.

Girls Swimming 

■  Uwharrie Charter (326 points) won a close contest with Northwood (320) and Southwestern Randolph (300) for the FRC title. Eastern Randolph had 124 points.

Winning for Uwharrie Charter was Megan Becker (100-yard butterfly, 500-yard freestyle).

Winning for Southwestern Randolph were the 200-yard medley relay (Isabella Tolar, Piper Blackmon, Caroline Becker, Riley Clapp), and Becker (200-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke).

Winning for Eastern Randolph was Stella Leonard (100-yard backstroke).

■  Randleman finished third in the Piedmont Athletic Conference champion-ship meet.

Winning for the Tigers was Kendall Fortson (200-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 100-meter breaststroke).

■  Randleman won a non-conference meet with Asheboro, Eastern Randolph, Uwharrie Charter and Southwestern Randolph.

Winning for the Tigers were Emma Herring (200-meter freestyle), Kendall Fortson (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle) and the 400-meter freestyle relay (Fortson, Baylee Thompson, Herring, Camila Reyes).

Winning for Asheboro were the 200-meter medley relay (Emily Jones, Kasey Ramirez, Emma Little, Penelopy McConaughay), Kloe Woody (200-meter individual medley) and the 200-meter freestyle relay (McConaughaay, Melody Alvarez, Little, Allison Zeyla-Dubon).

Winning for Eastern Randolph was Leonard (400-meter freestyle),

Winning for Uwharrie Charter was Cooper Tysinger (100-meter backstroke).
