LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: It was a busy week for prep athletes

Following two weeks of no classes because of snow and ice, last week was a heavy catchup week in sports. Let’s get to some of the highlights.

Boys Basketball 

■ Josh Polanco scored 12 points and blocked 3 shots in Trinity’s 59-41 loss to West Davidson. Kaleb Oliver added nine points. Mason Ingram had 4 points, 6 assists and 10 rebounds.

■ Jaxon Mabe scored 21 points to go along with 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals as Uwharrie Charter beat Jordan-Matthews 62-51. Justyce Lawson had 16 points, 3 assists and a pair of steals.

■ Will Dabbs had a big night with 26 points in Providence Grove’s 69-43 victory over Wheatmore. Cam Jones had 12 points and Andrew Thomas added 11.

Jordan Starkey and Collin Dodd both scored 11 points for Wheatmore.

■ Ryan Headen scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as Asheboro edged Northeast Guilford 62-61. Nirey White had 14 points while Darrion Johnson had 11 and Jewel Barrett-Riggins 10.

■ Tyler Gee poured in 34 points as Eastern Randolph outlasted North Moore 84-74.

■ Eli Johnson scored 15 points in Asheboro’s 67-58 loss to Southeast Guilford. White had 13 points while Darrion Johnson and Barrett-Riggins each had 12.

■ Colton McKee scored 19 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 58-49 loss to Jordan-Matthews. Caleb Abernethy had 9 points and Levi Dalke added 8.

■ Lawson scored 17 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 69-49 loss to Northwood. Mabe had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.

■ A.J. McDonald had 20 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists as Eastern Randolph overwhelmed North Moore 79-25. Gee had 17 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds.

■ Thomas led the way with 18 points as Providence Grove overcame West Davidson 65-56 in overtime. Dabbs added 16 points and 9 rebounds. McKoy also scored 16 points and had 4 assists. The Patriots out-scored West Davidson 9-0 in overtime.

■ Corey Cole and Mabe each scored 15 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 70-51 loss to Northwood. Lawson had 10 points.

■ Polanco scored 14 points and had 5 assists in Trinity’s 46-38 win over East Davidson. Mason Ingram had 11 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. Max Routh had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

■ Gee erupted for 41 points in Eastern Randolph’s 71-60 loss to Jordan-Matthews.

■ Gee scored 34 points and Hoyt Sparrow had 20 as Eastern Randolph raced to a 93-67 win over Jordan-Matthews. Cam Hinton had eight points.

■ Dodd scored 15 points and had 5 assists as Wheatmore downed rival Trinity 52-38. Avery Ivey had 8 points and 8 assists along with 4 rebounds. Gavin McPherson had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Nate Sams led Trinity with 20 points and Polanco had 9.

■ Thomas hit the game-winning 3-pointer and finished with 15 points as Providence Grove beat Thomasville 55-54. Dabbs led the Patriots with 18 points. McKoy had 17 points and 7 rebounds.

Girls Basketball 

■ Callie Craven scored 20 points as Eastern Randolph swamped North Moore 63-39. Craven also had 7 assists and 5 steals. Reagan Beaver scored 19 points while Katelyn Brown added 10. Roxanne Davis had 9 points and 10 rebounds.

■ Ady Scherer scored 13 points and Maliyah Brady had 10 in Asheboro’s 35-18 win over Northeast Guilford.

■ Teely Harris scored 12 points while Tori Dixon had 10 and Lainey Thomas 9 in Uwharrie Charter’s 68-16 rout of Jordan-Matthews. 

■ Kaelyn Whitehart led the way with 23 points as Wheatmore edged Providence Grove 48-46. Madeline Mullinix and Kinsley Davis each scored eight points.

Adi Johnson scored a game-high 24 points for Providence Grove.

■ Scherer scored 15 points in Asheboro’s 50-40 loss to Southeast Guilford. Brady added 11 points.

■ Maddie Strider scored 15 points while Jordin George had 14 and Nauttica Parrish 10 in Southwestern Randolph’s 57-25 rout of Jordan-Matthews.

■ Beaver scored 14 points and had 5 steals in Eastern Randolph’s 59-31 win over North Moore. Brown and Craven scored 13 points. Craven also got 9 rebounds.

■ Whiteheart scored 21 points and had 4 assists in Wheatmore’s 55-13 thumping of Thomasville. Davis posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. 

■ Laneane Scherer scored 15 points while Kailey Brown had 13 and Brady 12 in Asheboro’s 61-21 rout of Southern Guilford.

■ Beaver scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in Eastern Randolph’s 36-31 win over Jordan-Matthews. Craven had 6 points and 9 rebounds.

■ Madison Hill scored 20 points and Ava Nance had 9 in Trinity’s 48-37 loss to East Davidson.

■ Lainey Thomas scored 12 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 56-39 loss to Northwood. Naimah Al-Arif had 10 points.

■ Adi Johnson scored 14 points while Bailee Mitchell had 13 in Providence Grove’s 53-17 romp over Thomasville. Laurel Bernhardt had 9 points and Adalyn Whitaker added 8.

■ Scherer scored 18 points and Brady had 13 as Asheboro romped to a 66-29 win over Southern Guilford. Brown had 11 points and Katie Jones added 10.

■ Beaver scored 17 points and got 6 rebounds in Eastern Randolph’s 42-37 win over Jordan-Matthews. Craven had 9 points and 8 rebounds. Brooklyn Jone had 3 points and 9 rebounds.

■ Strider posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 assists along with 4 rebounds in Southwestern Randolph’s 77-29 rout of North Moore. George had 17 points and 6 rebounds. Calli Harrison had 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Boys Indoor Track 

■ Asheboro finished second by just 2.5 points to Mount Tabor in the 6-A state championship meet at JDL Fast Track.

Leading the way for the Blue Comets was Aaron Tyson, who won the pole vault with an indoor record of 13 feet. Tyson was also second in the long jump, third in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump.

The Blue Comets’ Caden Kutschenko was third in the long jump and Jamayion Balfour was third in the shotput. Michael Mark was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles.

Girls Indoor Track 

■ Eastern Randolph’s Mirianna Corea picked up her third state championship with a toss of 38 feet, 1.5 inches in the 3-A state meet. It was her first indoor state championship.

Trinity’s Kayla Franklin was second place in the triple jump.

■ Asheboro’s Jalaya Showers was third in the 55-meter dash and fourth in the long jump in the 6-A state championship meet at JDL Fast Track.

Boys Wrestling 

■ Providence Grove beat North Moore 45-32 in the first round of the 3-A dual team state playoffs and fell 39-29 to Ayden-Grifton in the second round. Jeremiah Payne, Ayden Terwilliger and Charles Villaggio were all 2-0 for the Patriots. Malachi Combo was 1-0. Aiden Poplin, Skyler Henderson, Caden Mercado, Matthew Signor and Ryan Bullard were 1-1.

■ Eastern Randolph beat Pender 48-36 and Spring Creek 52-30 in the first rounds of the 3-A dual team state playoffs. Armani Tapia-Sosa, Lucas Kennedy, David Lambright, Trever Crabtree, Jamie Crabtree and Brody Ritter were all 2-0. Jaylin Talley, Eli Kidd and Maddox Carson were 1-0. Zeph Dunn and Trevor Young were 1-1.

■ Randleman fell to Morehead 62-12 in the first round of the 4-A dual team state playoffs. Alex Raymundo, Lloy Bosan and Shane Stevens won for the Tigers.

■ Southwestern Randolph fell 54-24 in the first round of the 4-A dual team state playoffs. Owen Pearson, Leland Davis, Rafael Flores and Whyatt Williams won for the Cougars.

■ Top-seeded Trinity dominated in the first two rounds of the 3-A dual team state playoffs with a 77-0 rout of Farmville Central and a 74-6 trouncing of Heide Trask. Joseph Trahan, Jeven Palmeri, Aiden Burkholder, Stephen Cross, Edgar Vasquez, Omar Edge, Trent Walker, Hezekyah Matson, Simeon Hammett, Addam Bernal, Haris Khan, Anees Khan and Grayson Carroll were 2-0.

■ Top-seeded Uwharrie Charter swept Salisbury 59-24 and Bunn 50-30 in the first two rounds of the 4-A dual team state playoffs. Chase Wooley, Andrew White, Huntley Adcock, Caleb Saldana, Brennan Worrell, Travis Nobles and Lorenzo Alston were 2-0. Ayven Virasone Chitavong, Ric Riccardella, Dakken Rodriques and Brice Pearson were 1-0. Ryan Lor was 1-1.

■ Asheboro fell 64-18 to Piedmont in the first round of the 6-A dual team state playoffs. Quanta McRae, Aaron Moran and Jonah Lester won for the Blue Comets.

Girls Swimming 

■ Uwharrie Charter senior Megan Becker won the 100-meter freestyle in 52.45 seconds to win the 4-A state championship. Becker was also third in the 50-meter freestyle.
