LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Icy remnants freeze prep schedules

With school systems canceling school last week in the face of stubborn snow and ice remains from Winter Storm Fern, conference play in basketball and postseason action in other sports were all postponed. But there was some news from the week.

Boys Swimming 

■  Inclement winter weather forced the cancellation of all regional championship meets across the state. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association used regional qualifying times to determine who would qualify for the state meets.

The following swimmers qualified from Randolph County:

RANDLEMAN — Tyler Fortson (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke), Cannon Eggleston (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke), the 200-meter freestyle relay, and the 200-meter medley relay.

UWHARRIE CHARTER — David Pages (100-meter breaststroke).

ASHEBORO — Sylar Shoffner (200-meter individual medley), and the 200-meter medley relay.

Girls Swimming

WHEATMORE — Sophie Williamson (200-meter individual medley, 100-meter butterfly), Jillian Wolfe (100-meter EASTERN RANDOLPH — Stella Leonard (100-meter backstroke).

RANDLEMAN — Kendall Fortson (200-meter individual medley), the 200-meter medley relay, and the 200-meter freestyle relay.

UWHARRIE CHARTER — Megan Becker (50-meter freestyle), the 200-meter medley relay, and the 400-meter freestyle relay.

SOUTHWESTERN RANDOLPH — Caroline Becker (100-meter breaststroke), and the 200-meter medley relay.

Boys Wrestling 

■  Wheatmore’s Spencer Moore signed a National Letter of Intent with Belmont Abbey.
