LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Cougars win a pair of football games

While most area football teams didn’t play last week, Southwestern Randolph actually played two games, and won both. Meanwhile, the SWR volleyball team swept Uwharrie Charter to take a commanding lead in the Four Rivers Conference. Here are some highlights from those and other results from last week.

Football

■ Asher Haggerty ran for a pair of touchdowns and caught a TD pass in Southwestern Randolph’s 42-0 win over McMichael for the Cougars’ second win of the week. SWR led 36-0 at halftime.

Quarterback Levi Dalke was 11-of-14 for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns, all of that in the first half. Nathan Garner caught 6 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown while also rushing 7 times for 77 yards and a touchdown. Brady Combs had a rushing touchdown in the second half.

■ Dalke threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as Southwestern Randolph outlasted Wheatmore 57-42. The Cougars scored on their first five possessions. Kenan Sugg caught 5 passes for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns. 

Dalke finished with 216 yards in the air and 51 yards rushing. Nathan Garner ran for 168 yards and 3 touchdowns. In addition, Garner had a touchdown catch.

Volleyball 

■ Carly Rush had 15 kills, 22 digs and an ace as Uwharrie Charter beat West Stanly 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 25-11, 25-18). Caroline Way had 14 kills, 16 digs and 2 aces. Amya Brewer added 13 kills.

■ Addison Phillips had 8 kills, 16 assists and 2 aces in Wheatmore’s 3-0 sweep (25-16, 26-24, 25-16) of Ragsdale. Lylah Gower had 7 kills and 4 aces. Emma Moon had 6 kills while Arabella Grant had 11 digs and 3 aces.

■ Cheyenne Dixon had 11 kills, 9 digs and 3 aces in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-8, 25-15) of North Moore. Sara-Kate Marion had 9 kills while Kaylea Beck had 6 kills and a block. Kennedie Welborn and Kardunn Rush both had five kills. Mary Kathryn Coltrane had 18 assists.

■ Dakota Odell had 9 kills and 2 blocks as Trinity swept to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-20) win over Wheatmore. Ari Pinkston had 7 kills and 2 blocks. Hayli Cox had 7 kills while Addison McCoy had 5 kills and 4 aces. Avalynn Johnson had 28 assists and 4 aces. Charlee Phillips had 10 digs.

Lylah Gower led Wheatmore with 5 kills and 2 aces. Addison Phillips had 4 kills, 9 digs, 6 assists, 4 aces and a block. Kinsley Davis had 11 digs and Peyton McCauley provided 6 assists.

■ Caroline Way had 12 kills in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 sweep (25-9, 25-12, 25-17) of Northwood. Carly Rush had 9 kills, 10 digs and 3 aces. Kam Leach had 4 kills and 3 aces. Braelyn Green had 26 assists and 9 digs.

■ Adalynn Whitaker had 20 kills, 14 digs and 2 aces in Providence Grove’s 3-1 (26-28, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23) loss to West Davidson. Kolbi Jo Lineberry had 14 kills, 14 digs and 5 aces. Caroline Wilson had 5 kills, 4 blocks and 6 aces. Emma Wilson had 22 digs while Cailyn York had 16 assists and 15 digs. Salem Wright had 14 assists.

■ Dixon had 11 kills and 15 digs as Southwestern Randolph swept Uwharrie Charter 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-18). Beck had 12 kills while Payson Hammer pounded 7 kills and 2 blocks. Zoey Brown and Marion each had four kills. Josie Auman had 11 digs and Kardunn Rush had the game-ending block.

Green had 38 assists and 5 digs for Uwharrie Charter. Way had 10 kills, 13 digs and 3 blocks. Leach had 5 kills, 3 digs and 2 blocks.

■ Johnson had 49 assists, 5 kills and 3 aces in Trinity’s 3-1 win (25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-14) over East Davidson. Odell had 12 kills and 2 blocks. Cox had 11 kills and 2 blocks. McCoy had 10 kills.

■ Adalynn Scherer had 7 kills while Maliyah Brady had 6 kills and 2 blocks in Asheboro’s 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-12) loss to Northern Guilford. Roxanne Davis had 5 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces. Cora Little also had five kills. Lydia Scearce had 3 aces and Lily Hunt had 18 digs.

■ Lilah Covington had nine kills in Randleman’s 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-11, 25-7) of Montgomery Central. Karrington Jones had 6 kills and Cimber Price had 6 aces. Olivia Ashby had 11 digs. Kenzlie Vaughn had 17 assists. Jolee McKinney had 11 assists and 3 aces.

■ Phillips had a triple double of 11 kills, 11 assists and 12 aces as Wheatmore swept Thomasville 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-18). Gower had 6 kills while Arabella Grant had 8 digs and 6 aces.

Girls Golf 

■ Adison Johnson shot 45 for medalist honors and led Providence Grove to victory in a three-team match with Ragsdale and Asheboro at Holly Ridge Golf Links. Asheboro’s Paige Kotlowski shot 48.

■ Johnson was the medalist with a 44 in a four-team Central Carolina Conference match at Winding Creek. The Patriots were second to East Davidson.

■ Danielle Jaecke was the medalist with a 51 and led Southwestern Randolph to victory in a Four Rivers Conference match at Chapel Ridge Golf Club.

Boys Soccer 

■ Juan Macias and Micah Garcia scored the goals in Asheboro’s 2-1 win over Mount Tabor. Jonathan Ortega and Kevin Martinez Cruz had the assists.

Boys Cross Country 

■ Wheatmore’s Ayden Fitzgerald was the overall winner and the Warriors took the team title in the Randolph County Meet at Randleman. Teammate Daylan Rada was second. 

Randleman’s Jack Gilmartin was third, Tommy Smithers of Trinity was fourth and Wheatmore’s Ryan Mabe was fifth.

Trinity was second in the team standings, followed by Asheboro, Randleman, Providence Grove, Southwestern Randolph and Eastern Randolph.

Girls Cross Country 

■ Laurel Bernhardt won the overall championship and led Randleman to a close win over second place Wheatmore in the Randolph County Meet at Randleman. 

Wheatmore’s Scarlett Hildreth was second and Randleman’s Reagan Henley was third. Gracilyn Elliott of Uwharrie Charter was fourth and Trinity’s Madison Hill was fifth.

Trinity was third in the teams, followed by Providence Grove, Uwharrie Charter, Eastern Randolph and Asheboro.
