Local Sports Roundup: Check out who did what in a busy fall sports week

Another heavy week of play in local arenas and on local fields last week. Here are some of the highlights.

Football

■ Christian McNair ran for a pair of touchdowns as Randleman rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat Montgomery Central 35-28.

The Tigers trailed 14-0 after the first quarter.

Kayden Saunders ran 23 times for 184 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Reid Herring threw a touchdown pass to Trey Burnett.

■ Quarterback Landon Fox was 22-of-36 for 122 yards and an interception in Providence Grove’s 23-0 loss to West Davidson.

Chase Collins had 9 catches for 41 yards. Connor Haithcock caught 5 passes for 24 yards while Nick Straughn had 27 yards on 7 carries.

Volleyball 

■ Adalynn Scherer pounded 18 kills and had a pair of blocks as Asheboro outlasted Trinity 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 15-9). Cora Little had a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs. Roxanne Davis had 11 kills and 5 blocks. Maliyah Brady had 10 kills and 3 blocks. Lydia Scearce had 5 blocks while Lily Hunt had 21 digs. Emma Ingold had 14 digs and 3 aces.

Hayli Cox led Trinity with 11 kills and Dakota Odell had 10. Ari Pinkston had 9 kills and 6 blocks. Mya Hooker also had nine kills. Cadence Mortensen had 7 digs and 3 aces. Charlee Phillips had 14 digs and 2 aces. Avalynn Johnson had 37 assists.

■ Cheyenne Dixon had 10 kills and 6 digs in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-17) sweep of Eastern Randolph. Sara-Kate Marion had 8 kills and 6 aces. Lexi Weidman had seven digs. Mary Kathryn Coltrane had 17 assists and Payson Hammer added 3 blocks.

■ Johnson contributed 50 assists as Trinity outlasted Providence Grove 3-2 (25-27, 25-21, 25-12, 24-26, 15-9). Pinkston had 14 kills and 4 blocks. Phillips had 29 digs and 4 aces. Odell had 13 kills and a block. Cox had 12 kills and 2 blocks. Bryn Holden had 17 digs.

Adalyn Whitaker had a massive performance of 25 kills, 25 digs and 6 aces for Providence Grove. Kolbi Jo Lineberry had 15 kills and 19 digs. Caroline Wilson had 8 kills and 4 blocks. Cailyn York had 21 assists, 19 digs and 2 aces. Emma Wilson had 22 digs while Salem Wright had 18 assists and 16 digs.

■ Little had 18 kills and Scherer had 16 in Asheboro’s 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-21) win over Southeast Guilford. Scearce had 5 aces and Ingold had 3. Kailey Brown had 46 assists and 3 aces. Brady had 6 kills and 3 blocks. Davis had 7 kills and 2 blocks. Hunt had 17 digs.

■ Caroline Way had 13 kills and 3 aces in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-14) shutout of North Moore. Kenzie Cain had 16 digs, 4 aces and 4 assists. Kam Leach had 13 kills and 4 blocks. Alyvia Spinks had 2 kills and 2 aces.

■ Addison Phillips had a triple-double of 14 kills, 13 digs, 12 assists along with 3 blocks and 2 aces in Wheatmore’s 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-21) loss to East Davidson. Lylah Gower had 5 kills and 2 aces. Isabella Maxwell had 3 blocks and 2 kills. Arabella Grant had 23 digs. Kinsley Davis had 14 digs and 2 aces. Peyton McCauley had 10 assists, 5 digs and an ace.

■ Phillips had 15 assists, 11 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks in Wheatmore’s 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-22) sweep of Chatham Central. Emma Moon had 6 kills and 15 digs. Maxwell had 5 kills and 3 blocks. Davis had 10 digs and 6 aces.

■ Dixon had 13 kills and 14 digs in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-21) sweep of McMichael. Kennedie Welborn had 9 kills and 3 aces. Weidman had 9 digs and 3 aces. Kaylea Beck had 8 kills and Coltrane had 21 assists.

■ Hammer had 9 kills, 3 blocks and 3 aces as Southwestern Randolph beat East Rowan 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-20). Beck and Dixon each had eight kills. Coltrane had 20 assists and 2 aces. Marijose Medina had 14 assists, 6 digs and 5 aces. Calli Mooneyham had eight digs.

■ Little pounded 10 kills in Asheboro’s 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-3) sweep of Eastern Guilford. Scherer had 9 kills and 4 aces. Brady had 6 kills and 2 blocks. Scearce had 9 assists and 6 aces. Ingold had 7 digs and 5 aces. Hunt had 11 digs and 3 aces. Brown had 27 assists.

■ Way had 18 kills, 5 digs and a block in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-10) sweep of Eastern Randolph. Spinks had 17 assists, 3 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Amya Brewer had 4 kills and 4 blocks. Cain had 6 digs, 2 aces and 2 assists.

■ Johnson had 36 assists and 8 aces as Trinity swept Thomasville 3-0 (25-4, 25-9, 25-8). Cox had 13 kills and McCoy added 9. Emery Lockwood and Pinkston each had six kills and a block.

Boys Soccer 

■ Zamire Bush scored two goals in Asheboro’s 5-1 win over Eastern Guilford. David Romero, Ivan Castaneda and Manuel Alarcon scored the other goals. Jonathan Ortega had two assists while William Miranda, Juan Macias and Alarcon each had one.

■ Grayson Carter had a huge game with four goals and Wheatmore romped to a 7-1 win over West Davidson. Jaylen Aquilina, Easton Dewitt and Trace Craddock scored the other goals. Brock Floyd, Connor Allen, Dewitt, Carter and Craddock all had one assist. Emmitt Frazier made four saves.

■ Yael Rebollar-Ortiz scored three goals as Southwestern Randolph blanked Eastern Randolph 6-0. Jayden Santos scored two goals and Gio Hernandez got one. Holt Tyl and Griffin Hall both had three assists. Hayden Morrow made four saves and Troy Adkins stopped a pair of shots.

■ Alarcon and Bush scored the goals as Asheboro beat Southeast Guilford 2-1. Macias had an assist.

■ Hernandez scored three goals as Southwestern Randolph beat Uwharrie Charter 9-0. Manny Dominguez-Torres added a pair of goals. Alejandro Jimenez, Santos, Rebollar-Ortiz and Hall each had one goal. David Leon and Tyl each had two assists. Rebollar-Ortiz, Santos and Hall all had one assist. Morrow made five saves.

■ Frazier made 10 saves in Wheatmore’s 6-0 loss to East Davidson.

■ Dewitt scored two goals and Carter got one in Wheatmore’s 8-3 loss to Thomasville. Frazier made nine saves.

Girls Tennis 

■ Larson Kelly, Lexie Owen, Lily Auman and Lilly Stutts won in singles as Southwestern Randolph edged North Moore 5-4. The team of Kelly/Owen took a doubles match.

■ Kelly, Owen, Alyssa Hampton, Anna Hamilton and Stutts won in singles as Southwestern Randolph beat Jordan-Matthews 8-1. The teams of Kelly/Owen, Hampton/Auman and Hamilton/Stutts swept the doubles.

■ Lauren Church, Emma Gower and Ava Botts won in singles as Wheatmore beat West Davidson 6-3. The doubles teams of Tatum Wagner/Leah Puckett and Makenna Lawrence/Gower won their contests.

■ Charlotte Smith, Madalynn Adams, Anson Frazier, Delaney Nall, Gretchen Phipps and Ghia Crandall won all the singles matches in Asheboro’s 9-0 win over Western Guilford. The teams of Adams/Frazier, Smith/Nall and Phipps/Crandall swept the doubles.

■ Wagner, Puckett, Gower, Lawrence and Botts won in singles as Wheatmore beat Providence Grove 7-1. The teams of Wagner/Puckett and Gower/Lawrence won in doubles.

■ Adams, Frazier and Nall won in singles as Asheboro edged Southeast Guilford 5-4. The teams of Adams/Frazier and Phipps/Crandall won in doubles.

Girls Golf 

■ Providence Grove’s Adison Johnson tied for medalist honors with a 45 in a Central Carolina Conference match at Holly Ridge Golf Links. Campbell Ziemba was fifth with a 50.

The Patriots finished second to East Davidson in the team standings.

■ Randleman’s Layla White shot a 50 and placed fifth overall in a Piedmont Athletic Conference match at Holly Ridge Golf Links. 

■ Paige Kotlowski was Asheboro’s low scorer with a 49 in a TAAC match at Forest Oaks Country Club.

■ Danielle Jaecke was the medalist with a 48 and led Southwestern Randolph to victory in a Four Rivers Conference match at Seven Lakes Golf Club.

Girls Cross Country 

■ Waverly Adams was Asheboro’s top runner, finishing seventh, in a TAAC meet won by Northern Guilford.

Boys Cross Country 

■ Asheboro’s Ellis Leroy was the Blue Comets’ top runner, finishing seventh, in a TAAC meet won by Northern Guilford.
