FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: A nutty week for some local football teams

In an unusual twist, four local high school football teams played a pair of games in the same week last week. Two 

in-county games were postponed on Friday, Sept. 4, because of an odd occurrence of loss of power at both venues. The games were made up on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 7. All four teams also had a regularly scheduled game for Friday, Sept. 11. 

Asheboro faired well, winning a pair of romps in five days. Randleman was one of those victims, but then may have turned its season around with a 20-point win over previously unbeaten SW Randolph. SWR had moved to 3-0 with its Monday win over Providence Grove. PG ended up 0-2 for the week after also losing to Eastern Randolph on Friday.

Whew. Here’s a look back at those games and Wheatmore’s first win of the season.

Football

■ Connor Brinton rushed 14 times for 110 yards and 3 touchdowns in undefeated Asheboro’s 35-7 victory over Rockingham County.

Quarterback Dallas Brinton was 7-of-12 for 106 yards and added a rushing touchdown. Cortavious Currie had 43 yards and a touchdown on 6 carries. 

Micah McLaughlin had 12 tackles, including 3 for loss, and 2 sacks. Ayden Letterlough had 15 tackles and 2 quarterback hurries. Quanta McRae had an interception and fumble recovery. Jefferson Aguilar made all five extra point attempts and four of his kickoffs were touchbacks.

■ In a makeup game played on Labor Day, Dallas Brinton ran for three touchdowns and threw for another in Asheboro’s 42-0 win over Randleman. The Blue Comets’ quarterback was 7-of-10 for 113 yards and had 69 yards rushing.

Nyrie White had 3 catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. Connor Brinton rushed 9 times for 84 yards and a touchdown. Garrison Cheek ran 4 times for 42 yards and a touchdown. Aguilar was 6-for-6 on extra points.

■ In another makeup game on Labor Day, quarterback Levi Dalke ran for a pair of touchdowns in Southwestern Randolph’s 28-21 win over Providence Grove. 

Nathan Garner added two touchdowns for the Cougars, who built a 21-0 lead and held off a Patriot rally. T.J. Schneider made all four extra point attempts.

Logan Fox tossed three touchdown passes for Providence Grove — two of them to Chase Collins and one to Connor Tozer. Kyle Keller was 3-for-3 on extra points.

■ Juju Banks rushed 10 times for 131 yards and 3 touchdowns as Wheatmore rolled to a 58-20 win over Jordan-Matthews.

Lane Cole had 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 8 carries. One of his touchdowns covered 62 yards. 

Noah Wyrick’s interception set up a 44-yard touchdown run. A fumble recovery led to a 32-yard touchdown run by Banks. Jackson Gallimore and Trey Lackey also had touchdown runs while Connor Benton threw a touchdown pass to Mills. Gavin McPherson rushed 6 times for 54 yards. 

Allen Connor kicked a 35-yard field goal and was 4-of-5 on extra points.
