Cougars, Eagles heading for volleyball showdown

Southwestern Randolph and Uwharrie Charter Academy volleyball teams continued to pile up wins as the two teams, tied for the top spot in the PAC-7 Conference, head toward a showdown later in the season. 

 

The first-place SWR soccer team also continued to roll with three more wins, including a 2-0 close one over second-place Trinity. Here are some highlights from those and other games played across the county last week.

 

VOLLEYBALL

 

*Addie Morgan had 12 kills and Riley Mazzarone had 34 assists as Providence Grove beat Southeast Guilford 28-26, 25-23, 28-26 in three tight games. Peyton Whitaker had 5 kills and 5 aces. Taryn Waugh had 8 kills and Mailey Way piled up 28 digs.

 

*Sarabeth Johnson had 15 kills, 11 digs and 3 aces in Trinity’s 25-13, 25-21, 25-16 win over Central Davidson. Kaitlyn McCoy had 12 kills while Avalynn Johnson had 30 assists and 9 digs. Natalie Franko had 8 kills and 3 blocks. 

 

*Sion Murrain had 18 kills and 3 blocks in Asheboro’s 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 sweep of Eastern Randolph. Ellen Long added 11 kills and 5 blocks for the Blue Comets. Anna Grace LeRoy had 24 assists, 12 digs and 2 aces. Piper Davidson had 18 digs, Lia George had 7 kills and Eva Vuncannon had 11 assists.

 

Addie Flinchum led Eastern Randolph with 14 kills and 18 digs. Kenly Whitaker had 25 assists and Mariana Corea had 4 blocks.

 

*Lizah Moore had 13 kills, 6 blocks and a pair of digs as Uwharrie Charter held off Bishop McGuinness 19-25, 26-14, 25-20, 25-7. Chloe Painter had 8 kills, 14 digs, 6 aces and a block for the Eagles. Kenzie Hill had 19 digs, 6 kills, an ace and a block.

 

*Madelyn Smith had 13 kills and 24 digs as Southwestern Randolph turned back Oak Grove 15-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-18. Gracie Hodgin and Riley Key both contributed 11 kills. Molly Smith and Raegan LeRoy each had 21 assists. Coley Shiflet had 28 digs and 5 aces. Jade Matias had 7 kills and 2 blocks.

 

*Camden Scott had 15 kills, 10 digs and 2 aces in Randleman’s 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 sweep of Providence Grove. Haley Hinshaw had 13 kills, 10 digs and an ace. Camryn Vickery had 37 assists, 7 digs and 3 kills. Karli Kennington had 20 digs and 3 aces. Haleigh Baity had 5 kills while Ava Jones and Mollie Hall landed 4 each.

 

*Hill had 14 digs, 7 kills, 2 blocks and an ace as Uwharrie Charter swept Eastern Randolph 25-16, 25-19, 25-18. Addie Duggins had 26 digs while Kayden Faglier had 7 kills, 2 digs and a block. Morgan Lowe had 5 kills and 2 blocks.

 

Flinchum led Eastern Randolph with 10 kills and 2 aces.

 

*Hodgin had 13 kills while Key had 10 kills and 2 blocks in Southwestern Randolph’s 25-22, 25-12, 25-15 win over Wheatmore. Smith contributed 12 assists, 11 digs and 4 aces. Raegan LeRoy had 27 assists.

 

*Murrain had 25 kills, 14 digs, 2 aces and 2 blocks in Asheboro’s 25-17, 27-25, 25-27, 25-15 win over Central Davidson. George had 15 kills and 7 digs. Davidson had 26 digs and a pair of aces. Anna Grace LeRoy had 27 assists and 2 aces.

 

*Karrington Batten had 13 kills and 4 blocks in Trinity’s 25-10, 25-11, 25-20 sweep of Jordan-Matthews. Natalie Franko had 7 kills and 4 blocks. Kaitlyn McCoy had 5 kills, 7 aces and 7 digs. Avalynn Johnson had 15 assists. Katelyn Hill recorded 7 digs and 2 aces.

 

*Duggins had 22 digs, 6 aces and an assist in Uwharrie Charter’s 25-21, 25-13, 25-10 sweep of Wheatmore. Lowe contributed 7 kills, 3 blocks and 3 digs. Moore had 7 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs. Chloe Painter had 21 assists, 8 digs, 2 aces and a kill.

 

*McCoy had 18 kills and 2 aces as Trinity outlasted Randleman 20-25, 25-18, 16-25, 25-17, 15-9. Batten had 17 kills and 2 blocks. Sarabeth Johnson added 15 kills and 3 aces. Hill had 21 digs and aces while Avalynn Johnson had 42 assists. Franko added 4 kills and 2 blocks.

 

SOCCER

 

*Fernando Hernandez scored five goals and assisted two other goals as Southwestern Randolph rolled over Providence Grove 8-1. Logan Freeman netted a pair of goals and Kevin Garcia scored once. Erick Lopez, Daniel Arellano and Pedro Ortiz each had an assist.

 

*Diego Bustamante, Daniel Resendez, Carlos Gonzalez, Ivan Castaneda, Juan Marcias, Jean Brou and Tyler Smith all scored one goal in Asheboro’s 7-1 rout of Western Guilford. Rudy Huerta, Cristian Raygadas, Henry Cruz, Ozmar Martinez, Alexander Diaz, Bustamante and Smith each had an assist.

 

*Laurel Suarez Ortiz scored the goal in Wheatmore’s 5-1 loss to Trinity.

 

*Pedro Ortiz and Hernandez scored the goals in Southwestern Randolph's 2-0 win over Trinity in a battle for first place in the PAC-7.

 

*Laurel Suarez Ortiz tallied the goal in Wheatmore’s 9-1 loss to Randleman.

 

*Hernandez added two more goals, giving him seven for the week, in Southwestern Randolph's 4-1 win over North Davidson. David Dominguez and Pedro Ortiz each scored one goal. Braydon Tyl, Jonathan Lopez and Hernandez each had an assist.

 

*Laurel Suarez Ortiz scored the goal in Wheatmore’s 6-1 loss to Lexington. Carter Queen got the assist.

 

*Jaydon DeNamur scored all three goals in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-1 win over Providence Grove. Israel Jaramillo had two assists. Victor Nino made several saves for the Eagles.

 

TENNIS

 

*Allie Popp, Sammie Parks, Lindsi Brown, Larson Kelly and Bethany Latham won singles matches in Southwestern Randolph’s 8-1 win over Uwharrie Charter. Doubles winners were the teams of Popp/Parks, Jurhona Robinson/Brown and Caroline Farlow/Jillian Cox.

 

*Maya Barber, Noelle Swaim, Abby Greeson, Caroline Tidwell and Alisa Shaw won in singles as Providence Grove downed Wheatmore 7-2. Winning in doubles were the teams of Barber/Swaim and Greeson/Shaw.

 

Carmen Turgeon won in singles and the team of Tatum Wagner/Arielle Turgeon took a doubles contest for Wheatmore.

 

*Barber, Swaim, Greeson, Tidwell and Shaw took singles wins as Providence Grove beat Southwestern Randolph 7-2. Winning in doubles were the teams of Swaim/Greeson and Elizabeth Shoe/Tidwell.

 

Popp won a singles match for SWR.

 

*Brown, Kelly, Latham and Farlow won in singles as Southwestern Randolph edged Asheboro 5-4. The doubles team of Popp/Parks provided the clincher.
