Blue Comets race past Montgomery

In a short week, the Asheboro boys rolled on in basketball and several local swimmers made waves during conference championships. Here’s a look at those and more highlights from the week.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

*Camden Walker scored 24 points as Asheboro routed Montgomery Central 78-35. Jerquarius Stanback contributed 20 points for the Blue Comets and Osiris Rodriguez had 11.

*Nathan Ellis scored 19 points to lead Southwestern Randolph past Uwharrie Charter 55-44. Marcus Robertson and Julian Mosley each had 11 points for the Cougars.

James Spinks led Uwharrie Charter with 18 points and Braeden Lamb had 15.

*Will Dabbs had 16 points and 5 rebounds to lead a balanced effort as Providence Grove beat Wheatmore 68-46. James Ellis had 15 points while Brady Collins had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Gabe McKoy added 10 points.

*Timothy Brower poured in 34 points as Eastern Randolph outlasted Trinity 81-77. Nicah Taylor added 19 points for the Wildcats and Will Stalker had 14.

Dominic Payne led Trinity with 26 points. Brandon Campbell had 22 points for the Bulldogs and Jacob Hodges added 10.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

*Caressa King led three players in double figures with 16 points as Southwestern Randolph beat Uwharrie Charter 54-24. Jordin George had 15 points and Mollie Strider had 10.

Navaeh Staples led Uwharrie Charter with seven points.

*Ziera Watson scored 19 points while Kenly Whitaker had 13 and Callie Craven 8 in Eastern Randolph’s 54-8 win over Trinity.

 

WRESTLING

*Aiden Burkholder, Edgar Vasquez, Spencer May, Brayden Hall, Levi Dennis, Jaden Allred, Kendall Miles, Charles Schaefer, Baron Justice, Zane Schloemer, Mason Stephens, Xavier Horton, Gavin Hardister and Joseph Trahan all won as Trinity swept Eastern Randolph 70-0.

*Sammy Salinas, Oscar Zelaya, Jeffrey Harper, Adam Curry, Quentez Butler and Guillermo Santos all were victorious in Asheboro’s 42-29 loss to Montgomery Central.

 

BOYS SWIMMING

*Providence Grove edged Wheatmore 58-54 in the Piedmont Athletic Conference championships. 

Winning for Providence Grove were the 200 medley relay (Ashton Taylor, Austin Williams, Cooper Wright, Grant Underwood); Williams (200 free, 400 free); Taylor (50 free, 100 breaststroke); and the 200 free relay (Underwood, Wright, Williams, Taylor).

Winning for Wheatmore were Colten Osborne (100 butterfly, 100 back); Alexis Vega-Torres (100 free); and the 400 free relay (Vega-Torres, Jack Tobey, Zachary Hazelwood, Osborne).

 

GIRLS SWIMMING

*Wheatmore (84) won the Piedmont Athletic Conference championship. Providence Grove (54) was second and Randleman (37) was third.

Winning for Wheatmore were the 200 medley relay (Paislee Hollifield, Emily Cribbs, Sydney Hall, Sophie Williamson); Hollifield (200 individual medley, 400 free); Hall (100 butterfly, 100 back); and the 400 free relay (Ava Williamson, Sophie Williamson, Hollifield, Hall).

Winning for Providence Grove was the 200 free relay (Aubrie Goodman, Chloe Toomes, Liv Coleman, Mia Browder).

Winning for Randleman was Kendall Fortson (200 free, 100 breaststroke).

Winning for Uwharrie Charter was Megan Becker (50 free, 100 free).
