Asheboro High standout Stanback moves to Boise State via the transfer portal

ASHEBORO — Former Asheboro High School basketball standout Jerquarius Stanback, who was named the Southwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year while playing for Alabama State last season, is transferring to Boise State.

Stanback spent the past two seasons at Alabama State after originally signing with Appalachian State. While at Alabama State, he sat out his freshman year before starting all 32 games this past season for the Hornets, averaging 8.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 2.0 blocks per game, making him just one of just six players in the country last year to average at least eight points, five rebounds, one steal and two blocks. He registered a SWAC-high 65 blocks and added 34 steals. He shot 52.2 percent from the field.

Once Stanback entered the transfer portal, numerous schools, including Wake Forest, NC State and UNLV, showed interest. He was contacted by Boise State officials, flew out to Boise, Idaho last weekend and signed a deal after arriving back at Alabama State.

Stanback is Boise State’s second transfer portal addition this cycle, joining North Dakota State guard Damari Wheeler-Thomas.

The Broncos are officially joining the PAC-12 Conference this summer.
