AHS boys cruise; THS’ Payne has another big night

Jerquarius Stanback led Asheboro’s boys basketball team to another victory and Dominic Payne opened some more eyes in a victory at SW Randolph. 

 

Here’s a look at those and other local sports highlights from last week.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

* Stanback scored 19 points in Asheboro’s 63-32 win over Providence Grove. David Rodriguez had 16 points and Elijah Woodle added 15.

James Ellis led Providence Grove with 11 points.

*Brayden Chapman scored 16 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 64-51 loss to North Davidson. Grant Kirk had eight points.

*Greg Price scored 19 points in Randleman’s 50-47 loss to Oak Grove. John Kirkpatrick had eight points.

*Parker Kines scored 20 points in Wheatmore’s 54-52 loss to East Davidson. Finley Bryant and Gavin Strickland each had 11 points. Bryant also had six assists.

*Nathan Ellis scored 22 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 57-44 loss to East Davidson. Chapman added 15 points.

*Will Dobbs scored 16 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in Providence Grove’s 51-46 win over Uwharrie Charter. Brady Collins had 10 points and 6 rebounds. James Ellis had 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Braeden Lamb led Uwharrie Charter with 17 points and Aaron Smith had 12.

*Jireh Price scored 13 points and Connor Cassidy had 11 in Randleman’s 50-36 win over Wheatmore. Pacey Wagner added nine points.

Robert Nyamongo and Bryant each scored 10 points for Wheatmore.

*Dominic Payne poured in 35 points as Trinity downed Southwestern Randolph 69-56. Grayson Earls added 10 points and Jacob Hodges had 9.

Marcus Robertson led Southwestern Randolph with 26 points and Nathan Ellis had 10.

*Nicah Taylor scored 19 points in Eastern Randolph’s 75-57 loss to Oak Grove. Julian Brooks had 10 points and 9 rebounds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

*Chenleigh Robinson scored 12 points and Audra Petty had 8 in Randleman’s 43-33 loss to Oak Grove.

*Ziera Watson had 11 points and 5 steals in Eastern Randolph’s 53-33 loss to Williams. Kenly Whitaker scored 9 points while Callie Craven had 8 points and 10 rebounds.

*Jordin George scored 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds as Southwestern Randolph whipped North Davidson 55-28. Kenzie Martin had 10 points and 8 rebounds.

*Brooke Ingram scored 26 points in Providence Grove’s 59-53 win over Uwharrie Charter. Jada Nixon added 18 points.

Chloe Painter led Uwharrie Charter with 22 points and Nevaeh Staples had 12.

*Audra Petty produced a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds in Randleman’s 47-41 win over Wheatmore. Robinson had 11 points and 5 rebounds while Bella Byman had 9 points.

Brianna Hill led Wheatmore with 17 points. Meredith Partin scored 11 points and Kynnedi Routh had 10.

*Caressa King scored 14 points, George had 12 and Martin 9 in Southwestern Randolph’s 55-4 win over Trinity.

WRESTLING

*Trinity’s Aiden Burkholder (106), Spencer May (120), Levi Dennis (132), Charles Schaefer (144), Baron Justice (150) and Gavin Hardister (285) won in the Trinity Invitational. Other Bulldogs in the top four were Edgar Vasquez (2nd, 113), Brayden Hall (2nd, 126), Omega Edge (4th, 126) and Lawson Coltrane (2nd, 165).

Top four finishers for Asheboro were Barek Bigelow (4th, 120), Sammy Salinas (4th, 132), Oscar Zelaya (4th, 138), Alex Patino (2nd, 144) and Nico Otero (4th, 215).

Randleman’s Braxton Walker won at 190. The Tigers’ Alex Raymundo (2nd, 106) and Jesus Garcia (2nd, 150) also placed.

Top four finishers from Southwestern Randolph were Reece Poe (4th, 106), Janaskel Perez Mortera (4th, 113), Michael Jaimes (2nd, 138) and Erick Lopez Rabadan (4th, 165).

*Joshua Watson, Lucas Kennedy, Trever Crabtree, David Lambright, Jamie Crabtree and Maddox Carson were all 5-0 as Eastern Randolph swept the North Moore Duals. Trevor Young was 4-0 while Omarrius Little and Zuri Francis were 4-1.

*Uwharrie Charter swept the Coggins Duals at Southwest Guilford. Ethan Hines, Jack McArthur, Carson Robinson, Alek McMillikan and Caden Bond were all 5-0. Brennan Worrell and Rick Riccardella were 4-0. Jair Ulloa, Lorenzo Alston and Jaden Maness were all 3-0.

*Wheatmore was second to Rockingham County in the Nick Sgroi Invitational at Bishop McGuinness. Spencer Moore (144) and Dominic Hittepole (175) won for the Warriors. Others in the top four were John Wall (3rd, 106), Nolan Hammonds (2nd, 132), Trey Swaney (2nd, 138), Zack Starkweather (2nd, 150) and Noah Browning (2nd, 190).

*Adam Curry, Dylan Diaz, Luke Hughes and Salinas were winners for Asheboro in the Blue Comets’ 60-20 loss to Central Davidson.

*Omarrius Little, James Combs, Watson, Kennedy, Crabtree, Lambright, Francis and Carson were all winners as Eastern Randolph beat Southwestern Randolph 45-31.

Nabor Hernandez Perez, Ty Dixon, Rogelio Tejeda Fuentes, Jose Flores, Rabadan and Jaimes won for Southwestern Randolph.

*Swaney, Moore, Starkweather and Hittepole were all 2-0 for Wheatmore as the Warriors split a dual with North Davidson (48-32 win) and Oak Grove (52-18 loss).

* Hines, Brennan Worrell, Caleb Sidana, Torin Brigman, McArthur, Alston, Caden Thorne, Robinson, Millikan, Jaden Maness and Michael Shropshire won as Uwharrie Charter beat Randleman 62-15.

Connor Routh, Kolby Garner and Walker won for Randleman.

*Buckholder, Vasquez, May, Hall, Dennis, Jaden Allred, Kendall Miles, Schaefer, Zane Schoemer, Mason Stephens, Coltrane, Xavier Horton, Hardister and Joseph Trahan won as Trinity swept Providence Grove 81-0.

SOCCER

*Southwestern Randolph’s Fernando Hernandez was named to the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association 2-A all-state team and Randleman’s Brian Vaughn was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Named to 2-A All-Region 8 team were Christian Garcia (Randleman), Owen Leonard (Randleman), Kaleb Freeman (Southwestern Randolph), David Lopez (Southwestern Randolph) and Moises Ventura (Trinity). Making the 3-A all-region team from Asheboro were Alan Alcantara, Alexander Perez, Arath Jaimes, Carlos Gonzalez, Daniel Gutierrez, Diego Bustamante and Ozmar Martinez.

VOLLEYBALL

*Southwestern Randolph’s Coley Shiflet and Madelyn Smith were named to the North Carolina Volleyball Coaches Association 2-A all-state team.
