Lois Brewer Purvis

HIGH FALLS — Lois Brewer Purvis, 87, of High Falls, died Sunday, June 4, 2023, at her residence.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Robbins, with Rev. Vic Hill and Rev. Sam Grist officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Lois Jean was a native and lifelong resident of Moore County and a graduate of High Falls School. She helped establish Mid-State Furniture in the early 1960s, which became a fixture of the High Falls community.

In 1987, she single handedly opened her own furniture store in Carthage, as Mid-State Furniture of Carthage. Lois Jean worked tirelessly six days a week until her health required her to rest on Saturdays. She continued to work until her death. She loved her customers and many became lifelong friends throughout the years.

Lois Jean was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill UMC for seven decades, having served in numerous committee positions. She was most proud of the annual chicken stew dinners.

Lois Jean was an avid Duke fan, even though her two oldest grandchildren were graduates of the "other" blue university. Affectionately known as "Nana" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she took great joy in spoiling them with lavish clubhouses and her famous BBQ chicken and biscuits.

She loved a warm fire, spending time with family and friends as well as helping others in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Elsie Barker Brewer; son, Michael G. Purvis; brothers, Pete Brewer, Marvin Brewer and Raymond Brewer; and sisters, Ada Mae Hicks and Phyllis Ritter.

Survivors include her daughter, Jackie P. Craven and husband Bill of Ramseur; son, Kevin B. Purvis and wife Terri of Bear Creek; daughter-in-law, Merle Purvis of Shallote; sisters, Virginia Seawell of Carthage, Pauline Garner of Lexington; sister-in-law, Joy Brewer of Bennett; grandchildren, Meredith Duell, Josh Purvis, Rachel Stanley, Brad Craven, Michelle Kirchenbaum, Megan Purvis, Graham Purvis; 12 great-grandchildren; special niece, Anne Dunlap; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Lawanda Tanner of First Health Hospice.

Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Loflin Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ramseur.
