Randolph County Comprehensive Transportation Plan being studied

ASHEBORO — Public information studies are being held to get input for county transportation.

The Randolph County Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) is a long-range, multi-modal transportation plan developed over a 25-30-year horizon, in cooperation with the Piedmont Triad Rural Planning Organization (PTRPO), NCDOT and local municipalities. It’s designed to coordinate with local growth plans, address present and anticipated travel demand, and guide future infrastructure investments.

The vision is to set a common, long-range vision for transportation facilities among county, municipal and state agencies. That covers highways, public transit, rail, bicycle and pedestrian systems.

It’s legally required. Section 136-66.2 of the NC General Statutes mandates that municipalities outside MPOs develop a CTP with NCDOT cooperation.

It will link transportation planning with land use, environmental and community goals.

The plan includes:

■ Highway facility types and recommendations (existing and proposed).

■ Public transportation and rail (including urban, regional and rural bus corridors, Amtrak/Freight routes, and potential fixed guideway or light rail stations).

■ Bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

■ Current and future conditions (lanes, right-of-way, volumes, capacity).

■ Environmental and human considerations.

The June 2026 draft public transit and rail recommendations include:

■ Old US Hwy 311 widening (Beeson Farm Road to Old Courthouse Road) from 2-lane to 5-lane with center left-turn lane.

■ US 220 Business widening (Vision Drive to Hub Morrison Road) to 5-lane with center left-turn lane.

■ US 64 Business widening (I-73/74 to US 64 Bypass) with intersection improvements, signal adjustments, new service roads and sidewalk additions.

Residents can review and comment on the CTP through public meetings and an online survey.

Meetings have been held in Liberty, Ramseur and Asheboro. More meetings are scheduled at the Randleman Public Library on Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon and at the Seagrove Public Library on Sept. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. An online survey will be available through Oct. 1 at https://publicinput.com/randolph-county-ctp-survey.
