Police Report — Steel Beams Pierce Truck Cab in Asheboro Crash; Driver Uninjured

ASHEBORO — A tractor-trailer driver narrowly escaped injury earlier this month when several large steel beams came loose and pierced the cab of his truck on US-64 in a crash that drew statewide news coverage.

The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. at the intersection of US-64 (Dixie Drive) and 1226 E. Dixie Drive.
According to a crash report from the Asheboro Police Department, a 2016 Freightliner tractor-trailer owned by Corriher Truckin Inc. was heading eastbound when traffic ahead came to a stop for a traffic light.

Once it was confirmed that the driver was unharmed, authorities moved the truck east along US-64 past Randolph Mall to help ease traffic congestion. Crews then began the task removing the steel beams from the cab, giving traffic for hours a view of the damage.

The driver told officers he attempted to brake but “barely collided” with the vehicle in front of him, a 2007 Toyota. The stop caused the truck’s load of several large steel beams to shift forward, crashing through the truck’s cab.

Asheboro Fire & Rescue and Asheboro Police responded to the scene. Despite the alarming damage, Battalion Chief Brian Hussey told Fox 8 WGHP that the metal beams came to a stop approximately 16 to 18 inches from the driver’s head.

No serious injuries were reported.
