ASHEBORO — A Greensboro man was killed in a head-on collision on N.C. Highway 49 near Mechanic Road in Randolph County in the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 14.
According to troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 6:00 a.m. when Dominick John Difilippi, 28, traveling southwest in a Ford pickup, crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The other driver, a 74-year-old Midland man, was traveling northeast in a Ford pickup towing a utility trailer loaded with lumber when the two trucks collided head-on.
Difilippi was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was transported to Moses H. Cone Hospital with injuries and is reported to be in stable condition.
Highway 49 was closed in both directions while emergency crews worked the scene. Randolph County EMS, Farmer and Westside fire departments all responded.
The N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. No charges have been filed at this time. Investigators say it appears Difilippi crossed into the other driver's lane, though the investigation remains ongoing.
