ASHEBORO — Construction of a new apartment complex for seniors is now complete and rental applications are being accepted. The first tenants are expected to move in this week.
Memorial Square Apartments at 210 Lanier Ave. is diagonally across Church Street from Asheboro’s Memorial Park. The subsidized senior community for those 55 years of age and older is now leasing one- and two-bedroom apartments.
The three-story building has 48 units, with 24 having two-bedrooms and two baths and 24 one bedroom and one bath. Each unit offers Energy Star appliances, extra storage space, ceiling fans, and washer and dryer hookups.
The building also has a laundry facility, a business center with computer and printer access, an elevator, a community room and a gazebo.
Each kitchen offers a dishwasher, disposal, refrigerator/freezer and range/oven. The heating and air conditioning are controlled by the tenant.
Some units are handicapped accessible, including walk-in showers with grab bars and seats.
The apartment complex is owned and managed by Wynnefield Properties, Inc., and there will be a manager onsite.
The location puts residents just a few blocks from Sunset Avenue and Bicentennial Park.
Applications are being accepted at the complex from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Applications must include a $25 fee by money order to cover the cost of financial and criminal record reviews.
Wynnefield Properties information indicates that 80 percent of the units (38) are reserved for elderly households. To qualify, one member of the household must be 55 or older and all other members must be 45 or older. The other 20 percent (10 units) are reserved for either elderly households or households in which the resident and all other members are 45 or older.
All 48 units will be reserved for households with incomes between 40 percent and 60 percent of the area median income, adjusted for family size.
The applicant’s household gross income must total at least twice the rental rate of the particular unit, excluding Section 8 voucher applicants, applicants to the DHHS-NCHFA Key Program and those with other forms of federal or state rental assistance.
The rent includes water/sewer/garbage service but tenants are responsible for their power bills.
Maximum occupancy for each unit is limited to two individuals per bedroom. Each unit must have at least one occupant.
Memorial Square is a smoke-free community. No pets are allowed except for service animals.
