Construction Closes Key Ramp from Dixie Drive to I-73/74 Southbound

ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) — A key interstate entrance ramp in Randolph County is now closed as part of ongoing construction linked to the proposed widening of U.S. 64.

The southbound on-ramp to I-73/74/U.S. 220 from Dixie Drive eastbound is now temporarily closed for construction. Eastbound drivers on Dixie Drive can still access I-73/74/U.S. 220 southbound using a temporary left-turn lane at a newly installed traffic signal. Detour signs have been posted in the area.

The detour / new traffic pattern began early Wednesday morning, May 21, and will remain through the fall of 2025. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) anticipates a medium impact on traffic during the ramp closure.

This temporary traffic shift is part of the larger $84 million US-64 Widening Project, aimed at widening U.S. 64 between the 64 Bypass and the N.C. 49 interchange. According to a plan released in March 2020, NCDOT will connect the entrance and exit ramps at Albemarle Road with those at U.S. 64 Business (Dixie Drive). As part of this reconfiguration, two new traffic signals will be installed on Dixie Drive, while the existing shared entrance and exit ramps on both sides of I-73/74 will be removed.

The project would also widen U.S. 64 from east of I-85 in Lexington to the Asheboro Bypass in Davidson and Randolph counties to 4 lanes (2 in each direction) with dedicated protected turning lanes. Construction on the ramps at the interchange extends down US-64 towards the bypass with crews already clearing areas near the roadways for the widening.

Motorists are advised to follow signs for detours, use caution in the area, and plan for possible delays.
