ASHEBORO — A Maryland man is behind bars charged with murder following a fatal stabbing in downtown Asheboro on Saturday night.

According to the Asheboro Police Department, officers responded to a welfare check at an apartment at 156 E. Academy St. around 9:02 p.m. on Jan. 31. Upon arrival, they discovered 31-year-old Mary Deloris Smith deceased from multiple stab wounds.
