Baltimore man charged in fatal stabbing of 31-year-old woman

ASHEBORO — A Maryland man is behind bars charged with murder following a fatal stabbing in downtown Asheboro on Saturday night.

According to the Asheboro Police Department, officers responded to a welfare check at an apartment at 156 E. Academy St. around 9:02 p.m. on Jan. 31. Upon arrival, they discovered 31-year-old Mary Deloris Smith deceased from multiple stab wounds.

atrol officers located a suspect walking a few blocks away from the crime scene and took him into custody. Police later identified that individual as 19-year-old, Nikkese Tyshawn Matthews of Baltimore, Maryland, and charged him with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 

Matthews is currently being held at the Randolph County Jail without bond.
