ASHEBORO — U.S. 64 Business at the Albermarle Road (N.C. 49) overpass is scheduled to temporarily close this weekend for construction.
A state highway contractor replacing the overpass needs to install cranes on the highway to set steel girders that will support the new bridge that is under construction alongside the existing overpass.
Because of the complexity of the work, U.S. 64 Business at the overpass will be closed to traffic in both directions starting after 12:01 a.m. Saturday. The contractor is expected to reopen the highway by 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15.
While closed, traffic will be detoured onto the U.S. 64 Asheboro Bypass between U.S. 64 Business and Interstate 73/74; then onto I-73/74 to the U.S. 64 Business interchange, which is near the Albermarle Road overpass.
This work is part of a construction project that began last year to widen about a mile of U.S. 64 Business between the Asheboro Bypass and the I-73/74 interchange and make various road realignments and improvements in the vicinity of the U.S. 64 Business and I-73/74 junction. The overall project is due to be complete in 2029.
