Sewer overflow attributed to pipe failure

ASHEBORO — House Bill 1160, which the General Assembly enacted in July 1999 requires that municipalities, animal operations, industries and others who operate waste handling systems issue news releases when a waste spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county:

On May 5, 2026, the City of Asheboro experienced a wastewater overflow as follows:

Approximately 11,500 gallons from a sewer force main near Lift Station #4 behind 551 Lexington Rd. The overflow was due to “Pipe Failure.”

The overflow reached a tributary leading to Cedar Fork Creek.

There was no apparent environmental impact from this overflow and City of Asheboro Drinking Water was not affected.

The Division of Water Quality in Winston-Salem has been notified of this overflow.  For information, contact the Superintendent of Wastewater Collection at (336) 626-1234, ext. 2205.

RCSO’s ‘Blessing of the Badges’ May 15

ASHEBORO — As part of National Police Week from May 15 to 21, 2026,  the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office will host its 8th annual Blessing of the Badges on May Friday, 15.

This event is open to the public and provides an opportunity for the community to come together in prayer and support of the law enforcement officers who serve and protect Randolph County. The brief service will be held at noon on the Sheriff’s Office lawn (indoors if it rains), located at 727 McDowell Road, Asheboro.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week. Each year, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers and supporters from across the nation gather in Washington, D.C., to participate in events honoring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Peace Officers Memorial Day honors federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have been killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.
