It’s not too late to register for the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge at www.healthycommunitiesA3.com. There is no cost to participate, no age limits and all are welcome. Participate as part of a team or as an individual. During the challenge, Special Community Events are planned each week. This is an all-activity challenge.
Convert your activities to steps and log your steps on the Healthy Communities web site www.healthycommunitiesA3.com starting September 27. Everyone who participates is a winner from increased physical activity and visiting natural places around our county to walk and hike with your family and friends.
Saturday
Mayor’s Walk:
Liberty at Freedom Park
Date: Saturday, Oct. 25.
Where: Meet at Freedom Park on Hamilton Drive, Liberty.
Time: 9 a.m.
Walk Length: Approximately one hour.
Dogs: Welcome but must remain on a leash at all times.
Liberty Mayor Filmore York will lead the walk. Stay around for the Halloween event in the afternoon. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for a Fall weather walk. In the event of bad weather, the walk will be canceled. There is no cost to participate, and no pre-registration is needed.
Sunday
Hike to top of Mount Shepherd, highest point in Randolph County
Date: Sunday, Oct. 26
Where: Mount Shepherd Retreat Center, 708-1044 Mt. Shepherd Rd Ext.
Time: 1:30 p.m. at the Farmer’s Market in Downtown Asheboro, 134 S. Church Street, to car caravan to Mount Shepherd Retreat Center OR 2 p.m. at Mt Shepherd Retreat Center.
Hike Length: About 3 miles total for the hike.
Degree of Difficulty: The hike to the summit is steep! This is a difficult hike.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times.
This hike is open to all but be sure that you are physically up to the difficulty of the steep climb to the summit. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring water and a walking stick if needed. Dress appropriately for a Fall hike. There is no cost to participate, and no pre-registration. If it is raining at the time of the hike, the hike will be canceled.
