RANDLEMAN — Join Jim Plant, local hiking guide, for a hike to the Russell Gold Mine, part of our area’s rich history of gold mining.
Until the California gold rush of 1849, North Carolina was the largest producer of gold in the US and Russell Gold Mine was one of the largest mines in the area. It is now a part of the Uwharrie National Forest in nearby Montgomery County. Explore a trail with a local connection to gold mining.
DATE: Sunday, May 17.
WHERE: Meet at the Farmer’s Market in Downtown Asheboro, 134 S. Church St., at 1:30 pm. to car caravan to the site in Montgomery County, north of the community of Eldorado.
TIME: 1:30 p.m. at the Farmer’s Market in Asheboro. 2 pm at the site.
LENGTH: About 2 miles total.
DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY: This is a moderate hike for all ages to enjoy.
DOGS: Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times.
Wear comfortable closed toe shoes, bring water and a walking stick if need ed. Dress appropriately for a Spring hike. Long pants recommended due to high grass. If it is raining at the time of the hike, it will be cancelled. There is no cost to participate, and no pre-registration is needed. This hike is open to all who can hike this distance unaided.
