One more weekend to get caught up in ‘The Mousetrap’

ASHEBORO — RYTC’s production of Agatha Christie’s whodunnit classic “The Mousetrap” has three more presentations this weekend, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The story centers on a group of people trapped by weather in an secluded location. Following a murder, no one is above suspicion as the determination to find the killer ensues.

The Sunset Theatre, 234 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, is the venue for the suspense. And the cost to partake? $17 for adults and $12 for students, seniors and military.

Advance tickets can be purchased at Brightside Gallery, 170 Worth Street in Asheboro, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday or online at sunsettheatre.org.

Veterans will be honored at Farmer Civitans breakfast

FARMER — For November, the Farmer Civitan Club is honoring all Veterans at its monthly breakfast, set for Saturday, Nov. 1, from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Farmer Civitans Clubhouse, 3986 Old NC 49, Asheboro.

A donation of at least $10 is the asking price for the all-you-can-eat meal. But this month, all veterans and current service members will eat free. 

Eat what? Hot biscuits, gravy (red eye or peppered), freshly cooked eggs, grits, Thomas Brothers center cut ham and sausage, and pancakes. President Becky Greer will serve hot coffee (reg or decaf) soda, orange juice or water.  Everyone else will need to  make a donation of at least $10 and

Money received is used for service projects, like Christmas Child Shoeboxes, or every December, members pack about 50 bags of food and treats for the “more mature.”

Anyone interested in joining the club can show up at the monthly meetings held on the third Monday or each month.

Louis Brady Open House set for Nov. 1 in Franklinville

FRANKLINVILLE — Louis Brady, longtime local artist, will hold his annual open house on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brady’s studio is located at 3642 Hardin Ellison Road, Franklinville, just off NC 22 North.

After taking an art course by correspondence while still in high school, Brady began painting signs for Coca-Cola beginning in 1964. 

He started his own business in 1972 and has continued painting signs and doing artwork ever since. Some of the Coca-Cola signs he painted or repainted are still on display. 

During his open house, Brady will have his artwork, including drawings and paintings, on display and for sale.

His paintings are available for purchase. Brady’s originals are one-of-a-kind pieces that are placed in hand-crafted frames with a neutral matte. His selection of prints, most limited editions, are signed and numbered.

Actor Derek Hinkey first Signature Series guest

ASHEBORO — The Friends of the Library Sunset Signature Series will kick off its 2025-26 season with actor Derek Hinkey — known for his portrayal of Red Feather in the Netflix television series “American Primeval” — at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, in downtown Asheboro’s historic Sunset Theatre, 234 Sunset Ave.

Hinkey’s appearance is titled “Behind the Scenes with Derek Hinkey: Boxer, Firefighter, Actor: Lessons from a Life of Courage and Transformation.” It is free and the public is invited.

Joining Hinkey will be students from the Guilford County Schools American Indian Education Program performing powwow and social dancing.

Hinkey is a Paiute-Shoshone actor and former professional boxer from Nevada, and an enrolled member of the Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Tribe. In addition to his role as Red Feather, he appeared in season three of Dark Winds, AMC’s adaptation of Tony Hillerman’s Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee novels, as Shorty Bowlegs.

He also has appeared in the TV series “Walker: Independence,” the film “Americana” and in Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga.”

 In his professional boxing career, Hinkey fought in the Super Middleweight division, winning nine times in 12 fights. As an amateur boxer he won Nevada Champion five years in a row and was a three-time regional champion.

Hinkey will discuss his journey in a conversation with Archdale Public Library Manager Ashley Rose.

The Sunset Series is sponsored by the Heart of North Carolina Visitors Bureau, the City of Asheboro and the Friends of the Randolph County Public Library. Its goal is to bring culturally significant speakers and performers to Asheboro.

Rock-n-Roll Elvis Christmas set for Sunset on Nov. 8

ASHEBORO — The Sunset Theatre will be the site for a “Rock-n-Roll Elvis Christmas” show starring Elvis tribute artist Rick B rooks and several musical guests, including Patsy Cline tribute artist Carol Rousseau.

Also on stage will be The Steam Roller Band and backup vocalists The Sweet Neapolitans.

The show begins at 7 (doors open at 6) and tickets are $10 for general admission or $20 for VIP.

RhinoLeap invites community to Nov. 9 celebration

ASHEBORO — RhinoLeap Productions, in continuing its 10th anniversary year of celebrations, will close off North Street in downtown Asheboro and hold an appreciation event for those who have supported its first decade of existence in Randolph County.

It will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, with cocktails, food from downtown businesses and an auction.

Admission is free.

Veterans Day Parade, luminaries set for Nov. 11

ASHEBORO — Downtown Asheboro will be the scene for a Veterans Day Parade held on Veterans Day.

This year, that’s Tuesday, Nov. 11, with the parade set to begin at 4 p.m. and follow parts of Church Street and Sunset Avenue.

Afterwards, the Pilot Club of Asheboro has set up a luminary celebration at the Historic Randolph County Courthouse, part of a service held to recognize veterans. Guest speaker will be Sgt. Ryan Tysinger with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.

Later that evening, at 7 p.m., there will be a showing of a film version of RhinoLeap’s moving tribute to Randolph County’s famous Company K, which played a key role in World War I. 

The play is built around letters sent back from war by members of the company, many of whom did not make it back.

RhinoLeap’s production has been made into a film, which will make its debut at Sunset Theatre.

Author Barbara Presnell — whose work the play was based on — and cast members in the play will be part of a Q&A session after the showing.
