Veterans Council receives $20,221 to help vets in need

ASHEBORO — Local veterans will benefit again after the 2025 Honoring Our Veterans Cruisin’ presented a check to the Randolph County Veterans Council.

This year’s HOV event, held Sept. 13, raised $20,221.35 for the Veterans Council. Those funds will be used to assist needy veterans in the county.

Harry Brower, commander of the Veterans Council, said much of the money is used to help with housing upkeep, such as rent, electric bills and clothing.

“Sometimes they get behind on payments and the money helps sustain them,” Brower said. “Some of them are too proud to ask for things.”

But when the Veterans Council learns of a veteran’s problem, they fill out an application with Randolph County Veterans Services, which confirms the need and sends a fax of the confirmation to the Veterans Council.

Once the need is verified, the Veterans Council finance officer cuts a check, which can be sent directly to the veteran or used to purchase items.

Brower said with the money they can buy materials for a veteran who needs a ramp at his or her home, for instance. The maximum for each case is $1,000.

“We need to address transportation needs for veterans,” said Brower, adding that some don’t have the means to get to work or to medical appointments. He said he would like to find ways to answer those needs.
