Cross Road raising money for new family visitation area

ASHEBORO — An outdoor family visitation area is in the future plans at Cross Road Retirement Community.

Independent residents of Cross Road, who came up with the idea for the visitation area, will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise money for the project.

The visitation area will be located next to the lower pond on the property.

Set on a concrete pad, the family visitation area will have chairs and benches set around a fire pit. Lights will hang from wooden posts. Additionally, there will be a children’s play set with games.

Donna Boyd, village director, said the independent residents decided that such a facility was needed for families who come to visit Cross Road residents.

“When families come to visit, this will give the children something fun to do and help make visits with family last longer,” she said.

“This is the first time we’ve ever done something like this,” Boyd said of the June 20 event. “We hope it’ll be the first annual fundraiser. The residents are excited.”

Cross Road is located just off Zoo Parkway on Old Cox Road, across from the Cone Health Zoo City Sportsplex. Boyd said those attending will enter from Old Cox Road and turn left into the Independent Living Village by the Clubhouse. Signs will be set up to direct visitors.

There will be a silent auction/bake sale, a cruise-in, gospel singing and hot dog meals. There will also be a 50-50 raffle.

Vendors will offer such things as coffee and donuts, a wide selection of local crafters, food and drinks, fairy hair, two massage therapists and the Hodge Family Practice’s mobile clinic, known as “Mabel.”

Boyd said she’s still looking for more vendors, auction items, cruise-in vehicles and gospel singers. She can be contacted at 336-225-7058 for more information.
